November 6, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Palm Beach Imperials News Release
Boca Raton, FL. The ABA Palm Beach Imperials will recognize the special efforts of a local child advocacy organization by naming it's home opener against the Jacksonville Jam - Kids@Home Night. Scheduled for Tuesday November 21st at the FAU gymnasium in Boca Raton, the Imperials showcases a fan-friendly and affordable brand of professional basketball and a dedication to helping the community.
"We plan to be active in local charities, community events and youth organizations," said Lamont Carr, head coach and general manager. Kids@Home is a wonderful organiztion and we think they are a perfect match to help launch our community support by specially acknowledging them on opening night.
Kids@Home is a Boca Raton-based non-profit organization providing a comprehensive array of independent living and self-sufficiency care for teenagers who at 18-years-old are aging out of foster care. The goal is to ensure the safety, permanency and well being of teens as they transition from foster care by providing coordination and linkages to housing, education, employment and caring adults.
In 2000, Joel Altman, CEO of Boca-based Altman Companies, established Kids@Home, after learning of the bleak future faced by teenagers, who at 18-years-old are aging out of foster care. "What greater way to invest your time and money than to reach out and be supportive to a young person to become independent, self-sufficient, contributing members of our society," said Altman, who sought the advice of child welfare leaders and advocates from across the country to help establish the basis for Kids@Home.
"Speaking for the Kids@Home team, we are delighted and privileged to be part of this history making night in Boca Raton," Altman said.
Kids@Home are currently help more than 90 former foster teens every day and provide life skills training for up to an additional 250 teens who are still in foster care. The list continues continues to grow.
