Impact Topple Vancouver 2-1
June 8, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Montreal Impact News Release
BURNABY, BC - The Montreal Impact (3-4-2) signed a 2-1 win (halftime 2-1) against the Vancouver Whitecaps (3-4-2), Sunday, at Swangard Stadium, in Burnaby, British Columbia.
The Impact tallied six out of nine points on this three road game streak and is now ranked sixth in the USL First Division standings.
"We were very coherent in our play," said Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. "Today, we were excellent in the attacking third, having created various scoring opportunities. Midfielders supported the attack and the players on the wings were very dangerous. Everybody worked well. It showed that the guys wanted to win today and we knew that it was going to be a tough night for the Whitecaps."
Impact forward Eduardo Sebrango scored the first goal of the game at the 20th minute. Following a long pass behind the Whitecaps defense, midfielder Rocco Placentino took a low shot that Whitecaps goalkeeper Jay Nolly blocked, but Sebrango scored off the rebound, registering his second season goal.
Young Whitecaps forward Marcus Haber tied the score at the 42nd minute. Taking advantage of a cross coming from the left flank from Ansou Toure, which deflected in front of the goal, Haber beat Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan with a point blank shot inside the 6-meter area.
Less than two minutes later, midfielder David Testo (44th minute) gave once again the lead to the Impact, scoring the winning goal. Testo took the Caps by surprise by firing a left footed high shot about 30 meters out that defeated Nolly to his right.
"With Testo's goal, we showed our character," added Dos Santos. "The team made a huge effort during the full 90 minutes. The players gave everything and we deserved the victory tonight. We definitely deserve our six points on the road."
For the first time in nine games, the Impact took the lead before heading to the locker room at halftime.
The Impact also signed its first win against the Whitecaps this season, after 2-0 and 1-0 losses, May 20 and 27, in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. The Impact now owns a 21-9-5 regular season record against Vancouver.
Following the 1-0 loss Thursday in Portland, Dos Santos made three changes in the starting lineup. Félix Brillant, Leonardo Di Lorenzo and Eduardo Sebrango all started the game in Vancouver.
Defenders Zanzan (national team), Adam Braz (thigh), Cédric Joqueviel (thigh) and Stefano Pesoli (knee) were not on the lineup.
Both Canadian teams will meet again at Saputo Stadium, June 20. Meanwhile, the Impact will play its next game June 18 at Saputo Stadium, against Toronto FC, in its fourth and last Nutrilite Canadian Championship game (live at 8 pm: Sportsnet, radio-canada.ca, CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990; tape-delayed at 11 pm: Radio-Canada).
