MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact (4-4-5) fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps (6-2-6) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night, in front of 11,949 fans at Saputo Stadium. Whitecaps midfielder Luca Bellisomo scored the game-winning goal in injury time, taking a pass from Martin Nash, and volleying a shot from the half circle at the top of the box into the lower left side of the net.
Whitecaps midfielder Greg Janicki scored the tying-goal in the 66th minute. From near the goal line, midfielder Justin Moose made a back pass towards the front of the net. Jonathan Steele dummied the ball, leaving Janicki in position to hit a low shot to the left of Impact goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic.
Posted around the six-yard box, midfielder Tony Donatelli opened the scoring in the 3rd minute by heading a free-kick taken by midfielder Leonardo Di Lorenzo.
Donatelli, who came close to adding a second goal when his one timer in the 40th minute was stopped by Nolly, is the Impact leading scorer with four goals and 10 points in 13 games this season.
"We dominated a large part of this game, but it just wasn't enough," said Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. "We had a lot of chances, but we have to improve our finishing in front of the net. Once Vancouver scored the tying goal, we found ourselves in a risky situation. We let them come back, which cost us the game."
The Impact played an excellent first half, dominating the Whitecaps with an 8-1 shot advantage, but was able to score only one goal.
"We played very well in the first half, but they put a lot of pressure on us in the second, and we had trouble dealing with that," said Donatelli. "We need to find a way to score that insurance goal."
"We started the game well and we managed to create a lot of opportunities in front of the net," said Philippe Billy. "We managed to score the first goal of the game, something we've had trouble doing this season, but it's frustrating losing a game this way. A lapse in concentration cost us the game."
Midfielder David Testo was replaced by Simon Gatti in the 23rd minute after suffering an injury just above his right knee following contact with a Whitecaps player.
Goalkeeper Matt Jordan (groin), forward Eduardo Sebrango (groin), as well as defenders Stefano Pesoli (toe) and Hicham Aaboubou (personal reasons), were all out of the line-up.
The Impact will play its next two games on the road, in Rochester this Saturday, and in St. Louis on July 10. The team will then return home on July 14 to face the Carolina RailHawks. Tickets are still available, and could be purchased through the Admission ticket office (514-790-1245 / 1-800-361-4595 / admission.com), or at the box office at Saputo Stadium.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS 12th minute - After penetrating the 18-yard box, Di Lorenzo fired a left-footed volley that just missed the Whitecaps goal.
28th minute - Striker Peter Byers, who made a run passed the Whitecaps defense, took a through ball from Simon Gatti and dribbled passed goalkeeper Jay Nolly, only to see his shot go wide.
70th minute - Posted in front of the net, Peter Byers deflected a Philippe Billy cross towards the goal, but Nolly made the save diving to his right.
