Illinois Piasa News Release
Pontoon Beach, IL, 10/25/13 - Illinois Piasa is proud to announce that they have re-signed Bosnian attacker Muriz Smajic. Muriz was born in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina where he played his youth soccer. After moving to the United States, Muriz played high school soccer at Affton High School. Muriz has experience playing in the PASL with Illinois Piasa (PASL) and Piasa FC (PASL-Premier), as well as having spent time in the Bosnian 1st Division with NK SASK.
"To say Muriz is quick is an understatement. In addition to having excellent straight line speed, he has exceptional lateral speed. Muriz provides us with versatility in that he can play as a forward or midfielder and is an excellent penalty killer," said Head Coach Doug Montroy, "For such a young player he adds a lot of experience and will be a player that drives opposing teams crazy."
Muriz was an original member of Piasa FC back in 2007. Back then the PASL was the developmental league of the MISL before it folded again. Back then the MISL and PASL used a scoring system with 2 and 3 point goals. "Muriz scored the first, and one of the only, 3 point goals in Piasa history in our first ever game against the Springfield Spirits in Springfield, Illinois. It was a memorable game in which we tied a veteran team 7-7," said Piasa GM Matt Williams, "I'm glad we don't use that awful scoring system anymore, but I'm glad that Muriz is still around. He's a good player and a good person. I'm happy to call him a friend."
Illinois Piasa opens the 2013-14 PASL season at home on November 1 against the expansion team Tulsa Revolution. Kickoff is 7:35 pm at The Field Sports Complex in Pontoon Beach, Illinois. Tickets are available at www.IllinoisPiasa.com/tickets/ or by calling 618-334-5700.
