November 1, 2011 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Illinois Piasa News Release
The Illinois Piasa of the PASL-Pro is happy to announce the return of players Jon Fridal, Chris Mattingly and Goal Keeper Greg Crook. All three players were a vital part of last year's Frontier Division Championship team and are expected to contribute on the same level again this season.
Jon Fridal, a Cedar Rapids, IA native, finished last season tied for 9th in the PASL-Pro in total points with 17 goals and 11 assists in 12 games.
"Fridal is an excellent midfielder with exceptional ball control," Piasa Owner Jason Cawvey said. "He has the ability to make people miss and from that open opportunities that otherwise would not have been there. It's exciting to watch him play; with his ball mastery he creates scoring opportunities not only for himself, but his teammates as well."
Jon is a graduate of Western Illinois University and played 4 years for the St. Louis Lions of the PDL. Jon is also the Assistant Coach for the soccer program at Maryville University.
Chris Mattingly is a Defender who returns to the Piasa with not only the goal of winning the division on his mind but also to be a team that opponents are eager to play against. "It's very fun knowing that a majority of the teams will be amped up to play us as last year's divisional champs," said Chris Mattingly, "which will make each game exciting and competitive for the players and fans."
"Mattingly is one of the most unselfish, gifted players we have, he simply does his job," said Piasa owner Jason Cawvey. "He was one of the first choices by the coaching staff, and rightfully so. He is a phenomenal defender with the ability to get both up and down the field. He is one of the most solid, dependable defenders to play the game!"
Greg Crook returns to the Piasa this season looking to repeat last season's performance. Crook led the league last season in Saves and Save Percentage and was named Player of the Week for Week 16.
"(To) bring back experienced players like Crook was simple, in my opinion he was the top keeper in the league last year," Piasa owner Jason Cawvey said. "He led the league with the top save percentage as well as the most saves. He is extremely passionate and demands the very best efforts of those who are out in front of him. With his leadership and keeper abilities, he is the perfect choice to anchor our defense."
The Piasa will open their 2011-2012 regular season this Saturday vs. the Kansas Magic, 7pm at the Sports Academy.
Illinois Piasa is a professional indoor soccer team entering their second season as a PASL-Pro franchise and will play their home games at The Sports Academy, located at 101 The Game Drive, Glen Carbon, IL 62034.
