Butler BlueSox News Release
Butler, PA - January 28, 2013 - A solid backstop is vital to a team's success and year-after-year Butler has had a solid catcher. Alex Jurich of the University of Illinois-Chicago will look to continue that trend in 2013, and he will look to do some damage with his bat as well.
"With Alex being the eldest of our three catchers, I look for him to take charge of our catchers and be a leader at that position," said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski. "He has come on strong for UIC the last couple years, and I look for him to do the same this spring and also this summer with us in Butler."
Jurich had a .273/.349/.430 line last spring in 165 at-bats, ranking fourth on his team in doubles and knocking four home runs as well. One of those round-trippers came in the conference tournament against Wright State.
With Jurich crouched behind the plate, his teammate, Tyler Detmer, will be patrolling the infield at Pullman Park. The sophomore is a native of Breese, Illinois where he lettered in baseball and football three years, and basketball in all four.
"Tyler is a very unique player, in which he has the ability to play every position on a baseball field," said Rebyanski.
"Though he had limited time last spring, I believe he is also going to play a major role in our team's success this summer both offensively and defensively. It will be fun to follow him throughout the spring."
While in high school, Detmer was named all-region and all-county in baseball in his junior and senior seasons. He appeared in nine games for the Illinois-Chicago Flames in 2012, knocking four hits and walking six times in 20 at-bats.
Illinois-Chicago opens their season February 15 against Texas A&M. Players on the 2013 BlueSox will be revealed each Monday.
