IFL Gears Up for United Bowl
August 13, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release
SATURDAY, AUGUST 15 - RIVERCITY RAGE (11-6) @ BILLINGS OUTLAWS (14-2), 2:00 PM MST
After five months of hard fought and fast paced action on the field, only two teams remain for a shot at the first ever IFL United Bowl Trophy. The United Conference Champion RiverCity Rage entered as a three seed in the Atlantic Division but caught fire in the playoffs beating the Rochester Raiders, Maryland Maniacs, and Wichita Wild to earn a spot in this Championship game. The Rage are led by a defensive unit that is allowing less then 35 points per game during these playoffs. DE Terrell Washington and First Team All-IFL Linebacker Joe Bevis have combined for 34.5 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-losses, 2.5 sacks, and an interception in three playoff games. Offensively, the Rage have seen a resurgence in their passing game with the return of QB Ben Sankey. The RiverCity gunslinger has thrown 13 playoff touchdown passes and accumulated 474 post-season passing yards. He has had the benefit of one of the league's top receiving trios in Luke McCardle, Hurtis Chinn, and Tyrone Timmons. The Outlaws can't sleep on this Rage offense, or they will be in for a long day on Saturday.
The Intense Conference Champion Billings Outlaws were the top seeded team heading into the playoffs and soundly beat the Fairbanks Grizzlies and El Paso Generals to reach the illustrious United Bowl Championship game. By virtue of their outstanding regular season, the Outlaws earned the right to host the Championship game in Billings. That could spell bad news for the Rage because the Outlaws have yet to lose on their home turf all season long. Billings is led by League MVP Chris Dixon at Quarterback. The athletic signal caller threw 69 TD passes in the regular season, and has not let up during these playoffs, passing for six scores in two games. Look for Dixon to attack the potent Rage defense with both his arm and his legs. On defense, it will be the job of Kelly Rouse to get pressure on Ben Sankey. The Outlaw Linebacker averages close to seven tackles per contest. The winner of this game will get to hoist the first ever IFL United Bowl Trophy, and go down in indoor football history. Who will win this contest? We'll all find out this Saturday!
