IFL Begins Training Camp Today
Published on February 27, 2009 under Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release
Richmond, VA: With Just 14 days remaining before the league's first regular season game on March 13 th , today marks the official first day of training camp for the IFL. Several teams will strap on the pads and begin practice while several others will wait a few additional days due to staggered starts to their schedules.
"We are very excited and confident about the quality of our team this season.", explained Heron O'Neal , head coach of the Billings Outlaws, "The players have reported in great physical shape and we look forward to getting to work." The Outlaws open their regular season with a visit from the Sioux City Bandits on Sunday, March 15 th giving the squad just over two-weeks to prepare for a game that will be recorded in the standings. Like in Billings, forty-five players are reporting to IFL cities across America vying for one of thirty roster spots that are available for the start of the season. IFL teams will dress 21 of these 30 players for each contest during 2009 which gives the teams a tremendous challenge in reviewing very talented athletes and making the right choices.
Four players from the 2008 season alone made the jump to the NFL last season from IFL member teams. With the addition of talent from the Arena Football League's decision not to play this year and the positive growth in quality of the league, it seems likely that many more will earn this same promotion in 2009. O'Neal finished by saying, "We can now boast that we have the most talented football players outside of the NFL competing in our league which should make it a great year for our fans as well!"
As mentioned above, the inaugural season will kick off on March 13 th when the Saginaw Sting visit cross-state rivals, the Muskegon Thunder for the first of 133 regular season games to be played between 19 teams during 2009.
