Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - Stan Drulia, head coach and general manager of the Port Huron Icehawks, announced that the team has re-signed veteran defenseman Daniel Tetrault for the 2009-10 season. Per team policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.
Tetrault (6-0, 205 lbs) will enter his second campaign in Port Huron and tenth season as a professional. Last season, he quickly established himself as one of the top defensemen in the league with a +21 rating and 37 points (8g, 29a) in 70 games, which tied him for the team lead in points among blue-liners. Of his points, four goals and 15 assists came on the power play.
Tetrault will be reunited with his defensive partner from last season, Ian Turner, who has also signed a contract for the upcoming season.
"We really want to be solid defensively again this year and signing Tetrault is a big step in the right direction," Drulia said. "He is a quality person and strong leader who plays in every situation for us. We will be able to pair him with Turner again, which will only make us better. These two guys lead our power play and will continue to make it better."
A fourth round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Tetrault played five seasons of junior hockey with the WHL Brandon Wheat Kings before he turned professional in the 2000-01 season with the Austin IceBats. In the 2001-02 season, he again skated with the IceBats and was named Most Outstanding Defenseman in the Central Hockey League.
The 29-year old native of La Broquerie, Manitoba, Canada next had stints in the American Hockey League and the East Cost Hockey League, before returning to Austin in the 2003-04 season and serving as player/assistant coach. He then continued his career in the Central Hockey League, playing parts of two seasons with the New Mexico Scorpions and three years with the Wichita Thunder.
The signing of Tetrault brings the Icehawks roster to six players for the upcoming season, including four defensemen. The line-up includes defensemen Ian Turner, Rob Cowan and Kevin Hansen and forwards Kerry Bowman and Jason Kostadine.
