Icehawks Soar Into First Place With Three-game Win Streak

PORT HURON, Mich. - The Port Huron Icehawks won three-consecutive games over the weekend to move into first place in the International Hockey League. The Icehawks came from behind in all three games, and captured a road win over Muskegon followed by home wins over Flint and Bloomington.

Port Huron now sits at first place in the IHL with a 3-2 record and six points.

The Icehawks also lead the league in third period scoring after the three thrilling comebacks.

Port Huron kicked off three in three with a 5-4 comeback win Friday in Muskegon. The Icehawks wiped out a 1-0 Muskegon deficit with just seconds left to play with a game tying goal from rookie Jamie Carroll. The Icehawks then notched three more in the second and a goal in the third to solidify the win.

On Saturday, Port Huron went into the third period down 3-0 to Flint, before coming back in grand fashion in front of a home crowd of 2,114. They connected on three, third period goals, including back to back goals by rookie Carroll, to force the game into overtime.

The game remained tied after five minutes of overtime, forcing a best of three shootout. Port Huron went two-for- two in the shootout, with Carroll and Felsner both landing goals.

Third period scoring was a factor again Sunday in a 3-2 win over Bloomington. The Icehawks

erased a 2-1 Bloomington lead with two, third period goals. Brent Hughes had the game tying shot, while defenseman Mark DeSantis landed the game winner with just over two minutes left to play.

The Icehawks look to extend their win streak this weekend when they conclude a four game home stand with games against the Fort Wayne Komets and the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday and Saturday. The contest with the K-Wings will be the first meeting of the two teams this season.

Fort Wayne stands at third in the league with a 2-1 record and four points. Kalamazoo is currently last in the league with a 1-2 record and two points.

The Icehawks then travel to Bloomington on Sunday for their second meeting with the Prairie Thunder.

Port Huron is 2-0 at home and 1-2 on the road.

Karen Newman To Sing National Anthem Friday

The Icehawks will welcome Karen Newman to McMorran Arena Friday night. Newman is best known for performing the national anthem before every Red Wings home game. She will performing the national anthem before every Red Wings home game. She will perform the national anthem prior to the Icehawks vs. Fort Wayne contest. Newman will also sign autographs during the first period, and copies of her CD's will be available for sale. Proceeds the sale of her CD will benefit the Diabetes Care Association.

In The Net: Goaltending was strong over the weekend with Ron Vogel posting two wins in net for Port Huron and rookie goalie Marty Magers recording his first win of the season Sunday.

In Saturday's game with Flint, Vogel recorded 30 stops, including a diving save to stop Flint's Greg Bullock with just 1:23 left to play and Flint on the power play. In five minutes of overtime, Flint outshot the Icehawks 4-1 but Vogel kept Port Huron in the game. He also stopped two Flint shootout shots for the win.

At The Top: Port Huron and Flint are tied for most goals scored with 13.

Icehawks rookie Jamie Carroll is among the league leaders in several categories. He leads the league for shots on goal with 27 and is tied for first in the +/- category at +5. He is also among the scoring leaders with three goals and one assist for a total of four points.

Defenseman Mark DeSantis is among the defense scoring leaders with one goal and two assists for a total of three points.

Practice Info: Team practices are open to the public and held Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and Friday 10 a.m.-11 a.m. at McMorran Arena, 701 McMorran Blvd., downtown Port Huron.

Icehawks on the Radio: All 76 of the Icehawks regular season games, along with all playoff contests will air on AM 1450 WHLS and AM 1590 WHLX for the 2007-2008 season. RadioFirst Sports Director Dennis Stuckey will return to the booth to call all the action both at home and on the road.

The Icehawks weekly radio show "Coaches Corner" will air every Thursday from 6 p.m. - 7p.m. at the Huron Athletic Club, 319 Huron Avenue, downtown Port Huron. Head coach and general manager Stan Drulia and several players will join RadioFirst sportscaster Dennis Stuckey for the broadcast which will air on AM 1450 WHLS and AM 1590 WHLX.
