
Icehawks Skate To Third Straight Win

FLINT, MI - A Mike Kinnie power play goal at 13:03 of the third period sealed the deal as the Port Huron Icehawks skated to a 4-1 win over the Flint Generals at Perani arena on Saturday night. who scored his league leading fourth goal of the season, tapped in a centering feed from Kris Vernarsky taking the wind out of the Generals sails. Tab Lardner also assisted on the goal. Port Huron was outshot 39-37 by the hosts, but Larry Sterling made 38 saves to earn his second win in as many starts this season. victory gives the Icehawks a perfect 3-0-0-0 start to the season and marks the first time a Port Huron team has won its first three contests since the 2002-2003 season.
Trailing by a goal, the Icehawks erupted for three goals in the second period. Kevin Hansen snapped a quick wrist shot past Flint's Rob Nolan at 2:16 into the frame on an assist from Mikael Bedard. Derek Patrosso scored the go ahead goal at 11:15 when he tipped a point shot from Nick Rolls in the high slot. The assist for Rolls, a native of Marysville, was his first point in professional hockey. Cory Stillman also had an assist on the play. Vernarsky capped a productive period for Port Huron when he scored on a 2-on-1 set up from Kinnie at 15:14. Stillman started the play form the Icehawks zone with a long feed to Kinnie, who feathered a pass in front to Vernarsky for a back hand finish, making the score 3-1 after two periods.
Flint's Jamie Schaafsma scored the lone goal of the first period to give the Generals a 1-0 lead. Tony Tuzzolino and Burke Henry assisted on the play just 4:12 into the game. Flint outshot Port Huron 14-11 in the period. game featured a first period fight between Port Huron's Mike Bray and Flint's Derek Parker, just two seconds after the opening goal. In the second period the Icehawks Patrosso and the Generals Jozef Wagenhoffer each received five minutes for a fight just 3:24 into the period. Patrosso and Tyler Willis got involved midway through the third period, with each player earning five minutes. Willis would also go with Port Huron's Jason Kostadine late in the contest.
The first place Icehawks are back in action on Sunday with a road game at LC Walker Arena against the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Face-off is scheduled for 5 PM. return home on Saturday, October 31 for a special Halloween celebration. Kids in costume will receive a ticket for just $5 and can participate in an on-ice costume parade.
