Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks ignited for six consecutive goals Friday on the way to an 8-1 drubbing of the Flint Generals in front of 1,886 fans at McMorran Arena.
Six different Icehawks turned in multi-point games to give Port Huron their largest margin of victory this season. Kerry Bowman and Tab Lardner each turned in two goals and an assist and Jason Chafe and Nick Lindberg notched one goal and two assists each. Ian Turner tallied a pair of goals and Kris Vernarsky dished out two assists.
The Icehawks (29-16-2-1) entered the game leading the Muskegon Lumberjacks by just one point for first place. The win, coupled with a Lumberjacks loss, gives the Icehawks 61 points and a three point advantage over Muskegon, Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne, who are now all tied for second. The victory also extended Port Huron's home winning streak to four games. The Generals fall to 16-28-2-4 on the season.
The Icehawks dominated play from the opening faceoff. They went on to outshoot the Generals 18-6 in the first period and storm to a four goal lead.
Chafe kicked off the firestorm at 3:39 in the first with his 12th goal of the season. Several minutes later, the Icehawks added another goal, this time from Turner. Late in the period, the Icehawks upped their lead to four when Bowman and Lardner scored just 18 seconds apart.
In the second period, the Icehawks continued to pour on the offense, with Turner, Bowman and Lardner each landing their second goal of the night before the 12 minute mark. Lardner's goal came on the Icehawks first power play opportunity of the game. Flint finally broke the scoring spree at 13:22 when Jordan Boman scored to avoid the shutout.
The Icehawks continued to dominate in the third, outshooting the Generals 16-5. They were rewarded with the period's only goal when Lindberg scored at 16:47.
The Icehawks outshot the Generals 45-17 overall. Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling made 16 saves for his 19th win of the season. Flint's Bill Zaniboni turned in 37 saves on 48 shots. The Icehawks were 1-1 on the power play and the Generals were 0-3 in a game that saw just six total penalties for 18 penalty minutes.
