
Icehawks Rout Generals 6-1 For Sixth Consecutive Win

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks downed the Flint Generals 6-1 at McMorran Arena on Tuesday to record their sixth consecutive win and move into sole possession of first place in the International Hockey League standings.
Mickael Bedard and Kerry Bowman each tallied a pair of goals in the win and defenseman Jamie Lovell had one goal and two assists.
The Icehawks scored four unanswered goals in the last two periods, including two power play goals, for the decisive win. The first power play opportunity of the game came in the second period and the Icehawks took advantage of it when Bedard fired the puck past goalie Nick Niedert at 6:02. Jamie Lovell and Mike Gershon were credited with assists.
The Icehawks increased their lead to 4-1 with another power play goal in the third period, this time from Jason Selleke at 13:12. The Icehawks offense wasn't finished yet and landed two goals just 11 seconds apart as the period wound down. Bedard scored his second of the night and ninth of the season at 15:40 on assists from Daniel Tetrault and Derek Patrosso. Ten seconds later the Icehawks got another goal, this time off the stick of Bowman. Brandon Naurato assisted.
The Icehawks netted two goals in the opening stanza and emerged from the period with a 2-1 lead. Bowman kicked things off with a goal at 6:06 on assists from Lovell and Naurato. Lovell scored a goal of his own at 14:45 to give his team a two goal advantage. Jason Kostadine assisted on the play. Flint cut the Port Huron lead to 2-1 with their only goal of the game just over two minutes later. The goal was scored by Jake Pence on assists from Pascal Rheaume and John Ronan.
The Icehawks outshot the Generals 34-29 overall. Goalie Larry Sterling earned his third straight win with 28 saves on 29 shots. Flint goalie Niedert made 28 saves in his first game with the Generals.
The Icehawks did not receive a single penalty in the game. The whistle blew for just
four penalties and 16 total penalty minutes, all on the Generals. The Icehawks were 2-3 on the power play.

The Icehawks have not been deterred by a tough schedule or injuries to several of their top players. The game was the Icehawks sixth in nine days and their sixth consecutive win. All six wins have come without top forwards Mike Kinnie and Kris Vernarsky and five have been without defenseman Ian Turner. The Icehawks also played tonight without forward Cory Stillman.
The streaking Icehawks remain undefeated versus the Generals this season (5-0-0-0) and improve to 17-6-0-1 with 35 points. The last place Generals fall to 6-15-1-2. Port Huron surpasses Muskegon for sole possession of first place. The Lumberjacks, who were idle tonight, will have a chance to regain a share of the top spot tomorrow with a game in Dayton.
The Icehawks will look to keep their winning streak alive on Friday when they travel to Flint for another battle with the Generals. They return home on Sunday to host the Dayton Gems at 5 p.m.
