Icehawks Regain Sole Possesion Of First Place

February 27, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks have been nearly unstoppable versus the Bloomington PrairieThunder this season and continued the trend on Friday as they skated to a 3-2 win over their rival at McMorran Arena.

The win, coupled with a Muskegon loss at Kalamazoo, gives the Icehawks (33-16-5-1) sole possession of first place in the International Hockey League standings. The Icehawks remain unbeaten in regulation in their last eight games and extend their home unbeaten streak to seven. The Icehawks also improve to 10-0-1-0 in the season series with the PrairieThunder and 20-3-1-2 in the all-time series.

The two teams traded goals early in the second period. Port Huron's Derek Patrosso notched his 15th goal of the season at 5:30 to give the Icehawks a temporary lead, but Bloomington tied the game with a Bill Bagron power play goal at 8:01. Three minutes later, Jason Chafe scored shorthanded on a pass from Kris Vernarsky to give the Icehawks the advantage. Robert Cowan also assisted on the goal.

The game saw some controversy early in the third period when a near Bloomington goal was called off by the referee. As the Icehawks went on to take a 3-1 lead with a Tab Lardner tally at 4:47, PrairieThunder Coach Jarrod Skalde expressed his frustration by throwing hockey sticks onto the ice. He was ejected from the game and given two game misconducts.

Bloomington could not reverse their fate as the clock wound down. Brett Holmberg scored with an extra attacker on the ice at 19:18, but it was not enough to send the game into extra sessions.

The Icehawks outshot the PrairieThunder 34-28 in the victory. Port Huron goaltender Ryan Mior made 26 saves on 28 shots to improve to 6-1-2-1 on the season. Bloomington goalie Jason Wolfe turned away 31 of 34 shots. The Icehawks were 0-4 on the power play and the PrairieThunder were 1-7.
