Icehawks Ready For Trio Of Games This Weekend
October 21, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks opened the 2009-10 season in a big way, besting the Fort Wayne Komets 5-4 at McMorran Arena on Saturday. The Icehawks will now look to build on that momentum as they head into a trio of games this weekend.
After playing just one game during the International Hockey League's opening weekend, the Icehawks face a full schedule this weekend. They play a home-and-home series with the Flint Generals on Friday and Saturday, hosting the Generals on Friday, then traveling to Perani Arena the following night. Port Huron will meet Flint more this season than any other team, with 17 games scheduled. The Icehawks then head to L.C. Walker Arena on Sunday for the first of 13 games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
Icehawks (1-0-0-0) Vs. Generals (1-1-0-0):
Last Season: Icehawks won series 10-5-1-0
Last Season at McMorran Arena: Icehawks won 6-2-0-0
Last Season at Perani Arena: Icehawks won 4-3-1-0
All Time Series: Icehawks lead 19-11-1-1
Icehawks (1-0-0-0) Vs. Lumberjacks (1-1-0-0):
Last Season: Icehawks won series 8-3-1-2
Last Season at L.C. Walker Arena: Icehawks won 3-2-0-2
All Time Series: Icehawks lead 17-7-3-2
Reversing History: The Icehawks win on Saturday marked the first time they have opened the season with a win in their three year history. With the win, the Icehawks seek to reverse another trend. They now hold a 1-0 record versus Fort Wayne on home ice, despite going just 1-5-2-0 versus the Komets at McMorran Arena in the 2008-09 season.
Roster Moves: Forward Derek Patrosso re-signed with the Icehawks on Monday. The Icehawks acquired his rights last week from Bloomington in exchange for the rights to Jamie Carroll. Patrosso played with the Icehawks last season, but his rights were traded to the Flint Generals (effective at the end of the 08-09 season) as part of a deal that sent Jeff Zehr to Flint in exchange for Steve Rymsha. Patrosso (6-1, 195) had a breakout rookie season in Port Huron, tallying 43 points (17g, 26a) in 68 games.
In other roster moves, defenseman Mike Gershon was placed on the 14-Day Injured Reserve List (10/18/09).
Power Up: The Icehawks finished the 2008-09 season ranked first in the IHL on the power play overall and have once again proven that they will be a force to reckon with in extra man situations. The Icehawks power play was key in Saturday's win, as they converted on three of eight power play opportunities (37.5%). They finished the weekend ranked first in the league on the power play overall and tied for first on the power play on home ice.
Hats Off: Icehawks right wing Mike Kinnie was named IHL Forward of the Week on Monday after scoring three times to lead the Icehawks to victory over the Komets on Sunday. Kinnie, who also had a hat trick in the Icehawks preseason game versus the ECHL Toledo Walleye on Sunday, Oct. 11, currently leads the league in goals scored and is tied for fifth in points, despite playing just one game.
