Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks are teaming up with the Port Huron Police Department and the Welkin Baseball Club for several fundraisers that will raise money for Special Olympics athletes.

The organizations will hold a Blue Water Fun Run on Friday, September 11 and a Vintage Baseball Game on Saturday, October 3 to raise funds for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. A portion of the money raised will be returned to the Port Huron area to send local athletes to the Special Olympics.

The three-mile Fun Run begins at noon at Lakeside Park in Port Huron and will end at the Municipal Office Center, 100 McMorran Blvd. A pizza party will follow and students from Woodland Developmenal Center and Icehawks mascot Hawkey will participate. Registration forms are available at the Port Huron Police Department.

"Last year 16,000 athletes from Michigan participated in the Special Olympics. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the lead contributor of financial support for these athletes," Port Huron Police Captain Jim Jones said. "It is great to have members of the Port Huron Police Department, Welkin Baseball Club and the Icehawks teaming up for these wonderful fundraisers."

The groups will hold a Vintage Baseball Game on October 3 at Pine Grove Park in Port Huron. The second-annual event will feature Port Huron Icehawks players versus the Welkin Baseball Club in a game of vintage baseball. The old-fashioned sport features strict rules, including no spitting, no swearing, no sliding and no gloves.

The Welkin Baseball Club was reformed in 2007 in honor of the original club that played in Port Huron in 1867. The group currently plays matches across Michigan.

A number of skills competitions will be held prior to the game in order to raise funds, including a closest to home plate contest. Fans will also be allowed to run the bases. Other fundraisers during the game include a 50/50 raffle.

If you are unable to attend either event, but would like to make a donation, you may send a check to: The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, P.O. Box 610812, Port Huron, MI 48061.

"We are pleased to partner with these groups to raise money for a wonderful cause," Icehawks Vice President/Business Manager Dave Goetze. "We would also like to thank the Icehawks Booster Club for their help organizing these efforts."

The Icehawks open the 2009-10 season at home on Saturday, October 17 versus the Fort Wayne Komets. Season tickets are on sale now and more affordable than ever. For more information and the 2009-10 schedule, call 810-966-3800 or visit www.porthuronicehawks.com.
