Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks could not find an answer for the Muskegon Lumberjacks Tuesday, falling 6-2 at McMorran Arena.
The Lumberjacks got on the board first, when Michael Beausoleil scored on Muskegon's first shot of the game just 1:07 into the game. John Surma gave Muskegon a two goal advantage when he found the back of the net at 17:13 of the first period. The Lumberjacks went to the locker room with the lead, but were outshot 15-10 by the Icehawks in the first period.
Muskegon scored early and often in the second period, as Todd Robinson scored just 37 seconds into the frame. Goals from David Rohlfs, John Surma and Michael Beausoleil would follow before the end of the period. The Icehawks got their first goal of the game when newcomer Peter Flache scored in his first game in front of the home crowd at 16:04 of the second. Tab Lardner and Kris Vernarsky assisted on the play. Despite the five-goal deficit, Port Huron outshot Muskegon 28-18 through two periods.
Matt Maccarone scored his first goal of the season off assists from Jason Kostadine and Rob Cowan at 18:08 of the third period, but it was too little, too late as the Lumberjacks skated away with a 6-2 victory. The Icehawks lost despite outshooting the Lumberjacks in each period, and 40-26 overall.
Matt Lundin earned the victory in net for the Lumberjacks, stopping 38 of 40 shots. Larry Sterling made 10 saves and allowed five goals before being pulled in favor of Adam Russo, who closed out the game stopping ten of 11 shots.
