Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks peppered 46 shots at Muskegon Lumberjacks goalie Clayton Pool on Sunday but found the back of the net just once and fell 2-1 in overtime at McMorran Arena. Matt Gens scored with 25 seconds remaining in the overtime period to key the Lumberjacks to victory.

The overtime loss was the second in as many nights for Port Huron. They were defeated 5-4 in extra sessions at Kalamazoo on Saturday.

Despite the overtime loss, the Icehawks (29-16-14-1) find themselves in the same position they were in at the beginning of the weekend; with a one point lead for first place in a tight standings picture. The Icehawks currently have 63 points in the standings and a one point lead over second place Muskegon (28-15-3-3). Just four points separate the top four teams in the International Hockey League.

The game was scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play. The Icehawks outshot the Lumberjacks 18-11 through the first two periods, but did connect until 5:52 in the third, when Derek Patrosso scored his 12th goal of the season on the power play. He was assisted by Nick Lindberg and Jeff Zehr. Less than five minutes later, Muskegon responded with a power play goal of their own to tie the game. Robin Bouchard scored the goal on assists from Luke Stauffacher and Gens.

The Lumberjacks had a chance to take the lead when Todd Robinson fired a shot at goalie Larry Sterling with just 3:10 left to play, but the goal was waived off.

The Icehawks outshot the Lumberjacks 46-24, including an impressive margin of 23-8 in the third period. Shots were tied 5-5 in the overtime period. Pool turned away 45 of 46 shots for the win and Sterling made 22 saves. Both teams were 1-6 on the power play.

The Icehawks return to action next week with three contests versus the Bloomington PrairieThunder. They host the PrairieThunder on Wednesday, then travel to Bloomington for games on Thursday and Saturday.
