Icehawks Defeat Mallards In A Shootout

PORT HURON, MI - Port Huron Icehawks forward Brandon Naurato scored in a shootout on Tuesday to lift the Icehawks to a 5-4 win over the Quad City Mallards and give Port Huron their ninth straight victory on home ice and their fourth consecutive win overall.

The Icehawks have won ten of their last 11 games and wrap up December with a 10-2-0-0 record. Port Huron is 21-7-0-1 overall and remains in a first place tie with the Muskegon Lumberjacks, who won tonight in Bloomington. The last place Mallards fall to 7-14-4-2.

Naurato was the only player to score in the shootout round. Icehawks goalie Adam Russo stopped two Quad City shooters for the win.

The two teams entered the second period tied 1-1 and found themselves in a back-and-back forth battle throughout the frame. The Icehawks pulled ahead with Derek Patrosso's 13th goal of the season at 3:08. He was assisted by Pete Rouleau and Mike Gershon. The Mallards then took the lead on a pair of goals from Patrick Levesque at 4:23 and 7:54. Mike Zbriger and Ryan Palmer assisted on the first goal. The second came on the power play and was assisted by Shane Lovdahl and Chris Lipsett.

The Icehawks battled back before the end of the period and regained the lead with a pair of goals just 25 seconds apart. The first came off the stick of Tab Lardner on an assist from Nick Lindberg at 13:44. Lindberg then found the back of the net at 14:09 to put Port Huron on top. The Icehawks outshot the Mallards 14-7 in the period.

Quad City forward Juris Stahls scored unassisted at 13:53 in the third period to tie the game 4-4 and send the contest to overtime. The Mallards outshot the Icehawks 7-4 in the third.

The Icehawks got on the board when rookie defenseman Steven Oleksy deflected an Adam Maccarone shot at 8:23 in the first period for his first professional goal. Lardner also assisted on the play. The Mallards later tied the game on a Justin White goal just two seconds before the end of the frame. Shots were tied 10-10 in the first period.

The Icehawks outshot the Mallards 33-26 overall. Russo turned aside 22 of 26 shots he faced to earn the win, while Mallards goalie Kyle Jones made 28 saves on 32 shots. The Icehawks were 0-2 on the power play and the Mallards were 1-6.

The Icehawks will play their first game of 2010 on Saturday when they host the Lumberjacks in a battle for the league's top spot. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Port Huron wraps up the weekend with a trip to Dayton to play the Gems on Sunday.
