IceDiggers defeat Soo, 12-3

Alpena MI: The IceDiggers wrapped up their exhibition schedule tonight in impressive fashion with a 12-3 win against the SOO Thunderbirds (NOJHL) at Northern Lights Arena.

Alpena jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the SOO answered with ten minutes to play in the first period, the IceDiggers would add another tally before heading to the dressing room with a commanding 4-1 lead after one period of play. The IceDiggers outscored the Thunderbirds 4-0 in the second period. Alpena scored four more in the third for the win. The win was their fourth of the preseason in as many games.

Every IceDigger skater registered at least one point in tonight's game. Jimmy McCusker (Novi MI), Erik Peterson (Alpena MI) and Chad Billins (Marysville MI) each scored two goals for the home team.

Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Hts, MI) Started in net and played two periods between the pipes making 18 saves on 19 shots before turning the game over to Alpena MI native Justin Marzean who allowed 2 goals on 10 shots.

Head coach Kenny Miller was pleased with the effort and understands how important the upcoming week will be. "We played hard for sixty minutes tonight and it was nice to see the guys get rewarded for their efforts, but we know this is only preseason and now it get's tough, we have a big week ahead of us and we will be playing very good teams, we will have to be ready for the challenge."

The IceDiggers will now turn their attention to the NAHL showcase that kicks off Wednesday in Blaine MN. The IceDiggers play the North Iowa Outlaws in the first game of the week on Wednesday Sept. 8th at 3:30PM CST. "This a great opportunity for our guys to play in front of every DI and DIII hockey program in the country, not to mention all the NHL teams that will be there." said Miller

The IceDiggers will depart Alpena on Tuesday morning at 10:30AM and make the 12 hour bus ride to Minnesota to prepare for Wednesday's game. Fans are encouraged to stop by Northern Lights Arena on Tuesday morning and wish the IceDiggers luck as they look to start the year off on a good note. This will be the only time this season the IceDiggers will play four games in four days
