Keystone Ice Miners News Release
CONNELLSVILLE, PA - The Ice Miners can't seem to stretch a winning streak past four games this season. Although they've won 8 of their last 10 and now sit alone in 2nd place in the North, a 4-3 shootout loss on Saturday night to Springfield snapped their winning streak at four.
Springfield dominated the first period and came out with a 2-0 lead on goals from Anthony Scarsella and Brady Tomlak. Scarsella made both goals happen, firing a point shot through traffic at 2:56 to open the scoring and then setting up Tomlak on an end-to-end rush at 14:47.
In the 2nd period, the Ice Miners used the powerplay to strike quickly when Austin Romzek went to the net and took a feed from Michael Maiden at 1:46 to cut the lead in half. Not long after, Cameron Smith netted his first goal in over 4 months when he tapped home another Maiden set-up at 4:57. Keystone completed the comeback and took the lead at 9:33 when Noah Batis took a long pass from Jacob Coleman and snapped a shot over Jr. Blues netminder Niko Della Maggiore. Springfield regrouped and tied the game with a powerplay marker from Kyle Meeh at 13:08 and a wild 2nd period ended in a 3-3 draw.
Neither team scored in the 3rd period or overtime and the Ice Miners partook in their 3rd shootout in 5 games. Like the previous two, the shootout final was 1-0 but this time Keystone came out on the losing end as Joey Lupo beat Alex Blankenburg in the 3rd round while Della Maggiore stopped all five Ice Miner shooters.
Keystone finished the season series with Springfield at 5-2-1 and will travel to Flint, MI for a two game set with the Michigan Warriors beginning Friday night at 7:00. Both games will be broadcast on FASTHockey.com, with the "away" feed carrying the Ice Miners broadcast.
