Hick's 2 Goals Leads Dayton Past Steel City 6-1
Dayton, OH--Friday night's Federal Hockey League game at Hara Arena matched the defending league champion Dayton Demonz vs. expansion Steel City. Hometown Dayton wanted to continue their climb to the top of the standings, coming in just three points off the league topping pace of Danbury. Steel City was looking for a stunning upset.
Jason Pietrasiak got the home team on the board first midway through the initial period when he blew one past Colin Dunne on the power play. Dayton's control of the game was evident, even with the slim lead. The Demonz had outshot the Warriors 13-1.
Jared Hicks scored down low, his 11th of the year and Dayton led 2-0 with about six minutes to go in the first period. The superiority of the defending champions showed in a 20-4 shots on goal advantage after one period of play.
Hicks converted Ahmed Mahfouz's centering pass into a 3-0 Demonz advantage just past the halfway mark of the second. The helper was Mahfouz's team best 36th of the year. Moments later, Dayton went up by four on Defenseman Brian Marks' 12th of the year. This one also assisted by Mahfouz.
Steel City finally tallied 14:58 into the period when MJ Graham beat Dustin Carlson top shelf. Dayton went into the third period with their three goal lead firmly intact.
The Demonz' lead increased to 5-1 at 5:46 of the third when Mark Rivera unloaded one from the right circle. Dan Morin finished the scoring with a slapshot late in the period, his fourth of the year.
Goaltender Dustin Carlson had a fantastic evening as he stopped 29 of 30 shots. The victory gave him a record of eight wins and three losses on the year as his Demonz won, 6-1.
