Demonz Continue Dominance over the Bluefins

By Robert Kirchner

(Dayton, Ohio) Tonight was the second meeting of back to back games between the hometown Dayton Demonz and the visiting New York Bluefins. Last night, Dayton defeated the Bluefins 10-2, maintaining their stronghold on first place in the Federal Hockey League. Tonight was no different as Dayton over-powered New York with 9 to 2 come from behind victory.

The Bluefins definitely did not look like the same team that was soundly defeated by the Demonz (on Friday night) in the first period. New York would lead at the end of the first frame 2-1. The Bluefins dictated the play though a disciplined team effort, while neutralizing the Demonz explosive offense, few scoring opportunities.

New York would go up 2-0, on goals by Tristan Lysko and Radoslav Konecny, scoring less than 2 minutes apart early in the period. Dayton would cut the score 2-1, when Trevor Karasiwicz controlled the puck deep in the Bluefins zone, which provided time and space, for Lucas Schott to put one on the board for the Demonz.

The Bluefins losing 2 defensemen, 1 in the first, and another in the second period, proved to be a key factor in the Demonz offensive onslaught for the remainder of the game. Dayton would go on to score 4 unanswered goals to lead at the end of 2 periods 5-2.

Just 2 minutes into the 2nd Seth Ronsberg evened it up 2-2, placing the puck under a fallen Bluefin goalie (Matt Pane). Nicolas Petriello received a beautiful stretch pass from Peter Cintala, that sent him in alone on Pane for a goal, and a Demonz 3-2 lead. Nicolas Petriello's 2 goals and a Jason Hill's score rounded out and padded Dayton's lead heading into the 3rd period.

Dayton would do all the scoring in the final frame adding 4 more goals. Ronsberg would add his 2nd goal of the game a minute into the period (power-play) made it 6-2. A minute later Nicholas Petriello (hat trick), top shelf gave Dayton the 7-2 lead. Karasiwicz wrist shot from the high slot made it 8-2. Luke Flick's goal, one on which, he drove into the slot area, and picked up a rebound off the post, finalized the scoring for the game and victory to the Demonz 9-2.

The Demonz added two new players to the roster, center Trevor Karasiewicz and defenseman Timothy Recio. Both players contributed in the victories over the Bluefins this weekend.

Privateers' Anthony Stops Danbury

Matt Anthony came into the Danbury Ice Arena sporting the best goals against average in the FHL. Saturday night, he showed the Whalers exactly why. The FHL All-star made 63 saves while Adam McAllister and Peter Campbell had five and four points respectively, as the 1000 Island Privateers defeated the Danbury Whalers 5-1.

Campbell opened the scoring with his first of two at 12:42 of the first period, banging home a rebound off a shot by Adam McAllister for his 26th goal of the season. Moments before the Privateers scored, it appeared the Whalers may have taken the lead. Chris Atkinson put a shot on goal that looked like it banged in off the back of the net. The goal light went on, but play continued as head ref Eric Ernst determined that the puck had rung off the near post.

The Privateers would extend their lead to 2-0 at 5:40 of the second on Adam McAllister's 1st of two goals, and his 24th of the season. Cody Ayers would pull the Whalers to within one at 8:06 of the second on the power play, his 19th of the year.

But that's as close as the Whalers would get as the Privateers would score 3 unanswered in the third to shut the door. Kris McCarthy scored his 5th of the year on the power play at 4:12 of the third. Peter Campbell would add another power play goal and his second of the game at 9:50. The goal was his 27th of the season. Adam McAllister would get his fifth point of the game at 15:38, banging in a rebound off a point shot by Campbell.

"It's a frustrating game for sure, but in the end you have to give credit to (the Privateers). They stayed with their game and made the most of their chances on the power play. Most nights when you put up 60 shots you're going to see results. Unfortunately, their goaltender was fantastic tonight." - Phil Esposito.

With the loss, the Whalers saw their 3 game winning streak come to an end. Mike Brown made 24 saves in the defeat.

These two teams will play the third game of three tomorrow afternoon at 5:05 at the Danbury Ice Arena. For tickets, go to thedanburywhalers.com.

Game Notes : The Whalers outshot the Privateers 64-29... The Privateers improved to 2-5 versus the Whalers this season... The Privateers finished the game 3-6 on the power play... The Whalers had a second goal waved off in the second period when Mike Atkinson put the puck into the net after it was touched by a high stick.
