Demonz Lose in Overtime Home Streak ends at 11Games

By Robert Kirchner

(Dayton, Ohio) Last night's game proved why the Dayton Demonz hold first place in the Federal Hockey League. The Demonz were able to score 6 goals on the stingy Privateers, along with the ability to match-up with them physically, to pull out the 6-3 victory. However, all good things they say must come to an end, as the boys from Up-State New York gained an overtime victory on Demonz ice with a 5-4 win. The Privateers scored 3 unanswered goals, including the overtime winner, and snapped Dayton's 11 game unbeaten streak at Hara Arena.

The quiet home crowd was the indicator of the Demonz play in the first period. Dayton was unable to sustain any type of offensive zone time throughout the period. This may have been for a couple of reasons. First, The Privateers would take an early 1-0 lead, just 39 seconds into the period, working the puck low in the Dayton zone; an open Shane Ferguson put the puck into the Dayton net from door-step. At this point the Privateers went into a shutdown mode. The Privateers frustrated any Demons attack with a 1-2-2 fore-check, the Demonz were unable to create any quality breakouts, and limited offensive zone time. Privateer goalie Matt Anthony made sure it was one and done, leaving no rebounds, further deterring the potent Demonz offense.

Power Play goals, wide open play, lead changes, most importantly great goaltending by both Jeff Rose of Dayton and Matt Anthony of 1000 Islands were highlights of the period. Jason Hill's man-advantage goal evened the score at 1-1. The Privateers responded with another power-play goal, when Peter Larsen's blast was tipped in by Taylor Larsen for a 2-1 lead.

Dayton rounded out the scoring in the period. Jesse Felton would tie the game at 2-2 on the power-play. Jason Hill would freeze the goalie, by holding on to the puck for an extra tick, and his slap shot would be tipped by Felton.

Dayton took their first lead of the night 3-2, this time on an even-strength goal. Brayden Metz made a beautiful pass to Ryan Ramage's, who blasted it past the Privateer goaltender.

The third period saw the Demonz take a two goal lead, but two late goals by the Privateers would send the game to overtime with the game tied at 4-4 at the end of the regulation. Peter Cintala's slap shot inside the Privateer blue line increased the Demonz lead 4-2. Midway through the 3rd period, Ahmed Mahfouz was awarded a penalty shot (the first in Dayton this year), however he was unable to capitalize, as he shot the puck wide of the net. This may have been the momentum changer as the Privateers seemed to get a second wind, never looked back scoring the next 3 goals to win the game in overtime.

The Privateers would make things interesting, as Brent Tamane scored a late to make it 4-3. The Privateers pulled their goalie (for the extra-attacker) with over a minute left in the game, Justin MacDonald goal, seconds later, in a scrum in the crease, sent the game into overtime, with a score of 4-4.

The Privateers scored the winner, 2 minutes into the extra frame, on Adam McAllister's game winner.
