Outlaws Top Demonz In Comeback Effort

WILLIAMSPORT - It was a pretty start for the Williamsport Outlaws as they found themselves down 2-0 in the second period, but they were able to put it together and come away with a 3-2 win over the Dayton Demonz.

Dayton hopped out to a quick 1-0 lead over the Outlaws when Ty Ariss beat Chris Whitley at the 2:06 mark to capitalize on a slow start by the Outlaws.

The Outlaws were sparked by the goal but couldn't tie the game heading into the 2nd period.

The Demoz used a Whitley turnover that converted into a wrap-around-goal by Jesse Felton to give the Demonz a 2-0 lead early in the second period. That would be the last goal that Whitley would surrender on the night, as the Outlaws were awoken by the sloppy play.

Special teams go the Outlaws on the board when Matt Smyth blistered the twine on the power play to cut it to a 2-1 deficit at the 8:17 mark of the second period. Rob Sich would add the tying goal on a lose puck in front at the 13:04 mark of the period.

Play got physical near the end of the second period, but nothing boiled over .

The Outlaws suffered a scare off the opening faceoff of the third period, when Dayton won the faceoff and turned it into a break away opportunity that was turned away by Whitley.

The Outlaws would not surrender a good offensive look to Dayton for the remainder of the game.

Rob Sich would give the Outlaws the lead for good with a turn-around rocket that beat Gerry Festa at the 4:56 mark.

The Outlaws would hold off a late surge from the Demonz to secure their first win of the season.

Williamsport outshot Dayton 41 to 39 in the victory.

The Outlaws travel to Cape Cod tomorrow for a showdown with the Bluefins. Game time is scheduled for 7:35pm.

POWER SURGE FUELS BLUEFINS 5-2 OVER WHALERS IN HOME OPENER

HYANNIS, MA - Three power play, including two in the last period, led the Cape Cod Bluefins to defeat the Danbury Whalers 5-2 tonight at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center tonight in Federal Hockey League action.

The Bluefins continued their strong special teams play in the first period. Matthew Harrington tallied on the man advantage at 5:05, assisted by George Nicholes and Steven Drizis. Cape Cod killed off a minor later in the period. Carlo Ricci tied the game early in the second period, but Drizis broke the draw, emerging from a scrum with the puck and flicking it from the blueline, beating Whalers goalie Mike Brown at 13:41. Jeff Dill drew the lone helper. Kevin McCready grew the lead to 3-1 from Harrington and Nicholes at 5:10 of the third period. Nick Wheeler increased the advantage on the power play at 12:55 from Brian Yanovitch and Casey Mignone. Ricci made it 4-2 late in the third before Mignone answered with a beautiful toe drag goal just 25 seconds later. Yanovitch and Luke Frey drew the helpers on the captain's third of the season.

Dashers Halt 1000 Islands Winning Streak

DANVILLE, IL - The Danville Dashers halted the 1,000 Island Privateers' winning streak at three games with a 3-2 victory. The contest was chippy from the onset and featured five fights and 94 penalty minutes. The story of the first period was the play of Privateers' goaltender Peter Dundovich. The Philadelphia native stopped all 23 Dashers shots that he faced including a breakaway from Dustin Skinner late in the frame.

Dundovich was not able to keep the momentum up in the next period as Darick Ste. Marie scored two goals in under 90 seconds to give the Dashers a lead they would not relinquish. Skinner set up the opening goal on a long cross ice pass to Ryan Stern who fired a pass to the slot and allowed Ste. Marie an easy opportunity to bury the puck. Less than 90 seconds later it was Ste. Marie again off of a pass from Skinner who received an outlet pass from Michael Jordan. Jonathan Juliano then extended the Dashers' lead to three goals after tapping in a Stern shot less than 45 seconds after Ste. Marie's second tally.

The Privateers would not go away quietly, however, as Chris Greene tipped in a Peter Campbell slap shot to cut the lead to two goals. 1,000 Islands continued to apply pressure to Danville and with 35 seconds left in the period Greene struck again with another deflection goal, this time it was off the stick of Terry Watt.

The Dashers lost goaltender Jo St. Pierre in the second period to a lower body injury after a collision with a Privateers player forcing Jordan Neamonitis to see his first action as a Dasher in the third period. Neamonitis was tested all period stopping all 19 shots he faced, including four shots during a Privateers power play at the end of the game.

Both teams will return to David S. Palmer Arena on Saturday night for a rematch.
