Aviators Push Past Danbury, 4-2
BROOKLYN, New York - The Brooklyn Aviators snapped a two game winless skid with a 4-2 victory over the Danbury Whalers on Friday night in Federal Hockey League action at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.
Chris Ferazzoli led the way offensively for Brooklyn with two power play goals.
The Aviators jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first period on Anthony Iaquinto's fourth goal of the season. KC Timmons let a shot go from the point and the rebound kicked out to Iaquinto at the bottom of the left wing circle. The rookie buried the loose puck into back of the net at the 9:48 mark. Danbury though tied it up, 1-1, late in the opening frame after Kelly Miller's shorthanded marker. Miller went in on a breakaway and lifted a backhand shot over the right pad of Aviators' netminder, Jo St. Pierre with 5:55 left in the first.
Danbury would take a 2-1 edge to start the second period on Alec Kirschner's fourth tally of the year. Kirschner stripped the puck from Ferazzoli inside the A's zone and snapped the puck under the right arm of St. Pierre. Brooklyn answered back with two straight goals from Ferazzoli, a power play marker, and Andrew Owsiak to give the A's the lead back at 3-2.
Ferazzoli doubled-up the A's lead late in the third period on his second goal of the game, also on the power player, which iced the victory for Brooklyn, 4-2.
St. Pierre made 33 stops to earn his second win in an Aviator uniform, while Whaler's goalie Pete Vetri turned aside 29 shots in the loss.
Brooklyn returns home to the Aviator Sports and Events Center on Saturday night when they welcome in the 1000 Islands Privateers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and the first 500 fans in attendance will receive an Aviators Water Bottle! Dashers Fall in their Return Home
Despite several roster changes since they left for an extended road trip, the Dashers struggled against the New Jersey Outlaws, dropping the game 7-2.
Both teams drew even in the first period. Goals from Travis Kauffeldt (Outlaws), on the powerplay, and Michal Jordon (Danville) set the pace for the first period. New Jersey dominated in the shot category to the tune of 18-5. The only other notable action of the period was a fight between Danville's Daniel Amesbury and New Jersey's Tyler Barr.
Two goals from Matt Miller, plus another for Nathan Oke, gave New Jersey a 4-2 lead by the end of the 2nd period. The lone goal from Danville came off the stick of Lee McClure. The second frame also resulted in the second disagreement via fists for the game. Jamie Zaleski (New Jersey) and Kaleb Chillman (Danville) both spent five minutes in the box to think over their issues.
The Outlaws finished off any chance at a Danville comeback with a three goal explosion from Travis Kauffeldt, Nathan Oke, and Kevin Cooper.
New Jersey finished the game 2-6 on the powerplay, while Danville finished 0-1 on the man-advantage. Final shots for the contest favoured the Outlaws with a 43-28 advantage. All three stars went to New Jersey representatives. Travis Kauffedlt, Matt Miller, and Kevin Copper received the honors first , second, and third stars respectively.
These same two teams will square off tomorrow night at the David S. Palmer Arena. Tickets can be purchased at the box office for just $8. Puck drops at 7:00 local time.
