Athens, OH – Christian Peterson (2 goals) scored twice in the third period for the Ohio Valley Ice Cats before an empty net goal with 26-seconds remaining on the clock provided the visiting Lansing Ice Nuts with a 7-5 win in the Ice Cats season opener at Bird Arena Friday night.

Mike Tefft scored the Ice Cats first goal in their history just 10-seconds into the second period to put Ohio Valley in front 1-0. Lansing responded with goals by Ethan Burnes (2 goals; 3 assists) and Matt Stack at 1:33 and 2:15, respectively.

Christian Peterson scored his first of two goals in the game at 3:40 from Jonathon Hox and Leo James but Lansing returned to the three-goal lead when with Rosty Saglo's (goal; assist) powerplay goal from Nelson and Burnes at 12:34.

Ohio Valley fought their way back late in the game with goals by Peterson at 12:49 and Nick Sabo (PP) at 13:05 to cut the Ice Nuts' lead to one before the empty net goal from Burnes secured the win.

Brian Tefft took the loss in net for Ohio Valley while making 33 saves.

With the win, Lansing improves to 2-0-0 on the season while the Ice Cats open at 0-1-0. Both teams will be back in action Saturday night at Bird Arena. Game time is 7:30 PM.
