January 23, 2009 - International Basketball League (IBL)
Snohomish County Explosion News Release

Monroe WA - January 23rd 2009 - The Explosion is back for its third season with the largest international schedule yet so far in the IBL playing teams from Canada, China and Japan. The Snohomish County Explosion look forward to new teams and a few changes in 2009. We start the changes with the new head coach former Explosion player Chris Weakley taking the helm. With only two players retained from last years team a new crop of players should bring some excitement to the Monroe Sports Arena.

Snohomish County Explosion 2009 IBL Schedule:

Saturday April 11th 7:15pm Explosion @ USA All Stars The Explosion will tip off the season on the road this year with the USA All Stars in Oregon. Last year the Explosion won both games against the USA All Stars. Look for the All-Stars, a team of hungry young talented players, try to return the favor handed to them last year with them looking to open the season with a two game sweep of the Explosion.

Sunday April 12th 7:15pm Explosion @ USA All Stars

Saturday April 18th 7:15pm Seattle @ Explosion Home

Seattle and the Explosion will be the first home game at the Monroe Sports Arena. Seattle has still yet to get a win against the Explosion as they are 0-4 lifetime. This I-5 Rival is looking for a win but the Explosion have outscored Seattle an average of 10 points per game in their previous meetings so Seattle has some work ahead of them.

Friday April 24th 7:05pm Explosion @ Vancouver Vancouver is one of the founding franchises of the IBL, and the ownership has built a team that can compete year in and year out. Placing second in the IBL Western Conference and loosing in the finals to Bellingham the eventual 2008 IBL Champions (Current overall franchise record against Vancouver is 3-2) Vancouver is always in the game. This year the Volcanoes will be a tough opponent with returning players and off-season pickups from both the D-League and overseas.

Saturday April 25th 7:15pm Bellingham @ Explosion Home The defending Champions of the IBL the "Slam" is one of the best rivalry games for the Explosion. The Slam hold a 2-1 lead in the series between these two teams as the Slam boasts a 70% wining record in its franchise existence. After they derailed the Express of Elkhart for its first franchise championship last year head coach Rob Ridnour, father of former Sonics Guard Luke Ridnour, is looking to repeat his success.

Friday May 1st 7:15pm Explosion @ Bellingham

Saturday May 2nd 7:15pm Seattle @ Explosion Home

Saturday May 9th 7:15pm Explosion @ Eugene

The Chargers of Eugene took a season off last year to reorganize both on and off the court but will look to rebound in 2009. The Explosion and Eugene have split the series against each other back in 2007 one game a piece and was a team that the Explosion's now head coach Chris Weakley scored 44 points against during that season. This year will be a different story with many former Oregon Duck players looking to play on a much more talented squad this season.

Sunday May 10th 7:15pm Explosion @ Portland

Portland will again be one of the most talented teams in the league with a roster full of college stars and former NBA players. The Chinooks hold a 3 - 2 lead in the series and all five games have been within 4 points of each other. Look for this matchup to be tough battles as both Portland and Snohomish County are always great teams and both are looking for a championship for their city.

Friday May 15th 7:15pm Explosion @ McMinnville One of a few new expansion franchises this year on the schedule for the Explosion including the Yamhill Highflyers. This team has began with front office moves and is a mystery at the moment for the Explosion on what type of roster will be filled in McMinnville.

Friday May 22nd 7:15pm Explosion @ Edmonton The Explosion will look to revenge two losses to Edmonton last year on the road in 2009. Owner Nathan Mumm lost a highly publicized bet between the previous owners last year resulting in apples from Washington being shipped to Edmonton because of an Edmonton sweep. The Explosion finished third in the Western Division ahead of Edmonton as they finished fourth. Look for this game to feature great Canadian talent along with a few NCAA division one standouts.

Saturday May 23rd 7:15pm Explosion @ Edmonton

Saturday May 30th 7:15pm British Columbia @ Explosion Home Since the exit of the NBA's Vancouver Grizzles the town of Vancouver has been without basketball until now. The IBL Expansion franchise looks to start out in season one with a true international team with players from both Canada and the United States. This gives the Explosion yet another team in the Northwest to welcome into the Monroe Sports arena to meet the best fans in the IBL.

Saturday June 6th 7:15pm Vancouver @ Explosion Home

Sunday June 7th 7:15pm Explosion @ British Columbia

Friday June 19th 7:15pm Eugene @ Explosion Home

Saturday June 20th 7:15pm China @ Explosion Home

The Shanxi Zhongyu of the Chinese Basketball Association went 0-2 against the Explosion in 2008. The Chinese Basketball Association has produced current NBA players Yao Ming (Houston Rockets) and Yi Jianlian (Milwaukee Bucks). This is sure to be a huge event with international implications on the line.

Wednesday June 24th 7:15pm Portland @ Explosion Home

Friday June 26th 7:15pm Japan @ Explosion Home

The Tornadoes are owned by Mr. Katsuya Sasaki. Sasaki is a representative of the Japan Basketball Academy, and has a passion for developing the game in his home country. Mr. Tatsumi Nishida, a founder of the JBA and its secretary for external affairs, will coordinate the Tornadoes' participation in the IBL. "Joining the IBL will not only be an exciting cultural experience," said Nishida. "This affiliation will give Japanese players and coaches the opportunity to improve by competing against some of the best players in the world."

Sunday June 28th 7:15pm Los Angeles @ Explosion Home The LA Lighting have been in the IBL for two year and this will be the first time that both of these teams square off. This is the last game of the season and with playoffs starting that weekend it will be a pivotal game for final playoff seeding. Time will tell on this matchup but with former NBA players on the Lightning squad this should be a fun way to close out the regular season.
