Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - A clutch eighth inning two-run home run from Taylor Davis proved to be the game-winner as the Iowa Cubs (32-59) beat the Nashville Sounds (44-46), 5-4 at Principal Park on Saturday night.
Starting pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng threw a quiet first three frames, retiring the first five batters he faced. Tseng got into trouble in the third after walking two batters, but he eventually retired the side without giving up a run.
The I-Cubs scored the first run of the game in the third inning courtesy of a Bijan Rademacher single up the middle that drove in Ryan Court from second.
The 1-0 I-Cubs lead quickly turned as the Sounds added three runs in the top of fourth. Court roped his second double of the game later in the inning to help the retaliation effort, but the I-Cubs still trailed 3-2 after four.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Mark Zagunis, who was 2-for-4 tonight, was able to score on a passed ball on Beau Taylor.
The game was knotted up going into the seventh inning until Ramon Laureano blasted a home run to left center off Tseng. Tseng exited the game after the seventh, ending his night with, seven hits, four earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
Davis was the hero of the night after crushing a two-run bomb to left field, giving the I-Cubs a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth. This was just Davis' second home run of the season, but it was enough for Cory Mazzoni to close out the night and give the I-Cubs a win.
Iowa and Nashville play the series finale at Principal Park tomorrow at 1:08. Promotions include Pedal to the Park, Knothole Gang, Family Four Pack and Kids Run the Bases Postgame. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
