Utah Valley Thunder linebacker Charlie Hunt has learned his lesson. While in high school, Hunt was a talented football player coveted by many top-notch college football programs, but his poor academics derailed any chance he had to pursue that dream.

"Everybody says it, but if I could go back I would have definitely done things a lot different," he said. "I was too busy being the cool guy and it ended up biting me in the butt." Hunt, who was born and raised in Jacksonville, Fla., tried to salvage his football career by going to Jacksonville Community College to get his grades in order.

After one year in community college Hunt (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) transferred to Florida State University, but he was still haunted by academic issues. He was on the team, but never played.

"When I got to Florida State there were more academic hurdles that I thought I had cleared, but they never got cleared up so I never got to take full advantage of that whole situation," he said.

Now Hunt is back in school - this time it's fire school - and he's making sure he doesn't make the same academic mistake twice.

"The one thing I took from messing up that opportunity was that any opportunity I have from here on out I am going to take full advantage of it and jump into it feet first," he said.

He just completed the first six months of a 12-month program to become a fire fighter. He will resume his studies in August just after the season is over, and by this time next year he is hoping to have a job with a fire department in his hometown.

Hunt has played six games with the Thunder and had 15.5 tackles and two interceptions. None was bigger than his interception against Wyoming in the final seconds to preserve the 43-37 win. "That was awesome. I felt that was my first real contribution," he said. "I came out here wanting to contribute right away."
