Hunger Stops Here: Washington Stealth Fight Hunger with Northwest Harvest

EVERETT, Wash. -- Hunger doesn't just affect families in winter months or during the holidays. It's a year-round battle.

With Washington among the sixth fastest growing states in terms of severe hunger, the Washington Stealth of the National Lacrosse League are doing their part to help fight hunger by teaming up with Northwest Harvest for its annual food drive on Wednesday and Saturday in Everett.

On Wednesday, April 10 from 7 to 9 a.m. Stealth players, their mascot Bomber the Fox along with volunteers will accept food items and cash donations for Norwest Harvest during the morning commute at the Broadway Ave. entrance to Comcast Arena.

Commuters can simply pull over to the curb on their way to work and hand-off non-perishable food items to Stealth players and volunteers. Anyone making a food or cash donation receives a ticket voucher for the Stealth's Saturday, April 13 home game with the Buffalo Bandits at Comcast Arena.

And on Saturday, April 13, Stealth fans can bring food items for donation to Northwest Harvest at the Washington Stealth home game with the Buffalo Bandits at Comcast Arena. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for the 6:45 p.m. National Lacrosse League contest.

Most desired are non-perishable food items such as proteins like canned tuna and chicken, chili, canned vegetables, and baby food.

Northwest Harvest will also accept cash donations, which can also help feed families. Northwest Harvest can serve a family of three for just 67 cents.

"The need for nutritious food for families in need is increasing more than ever," said Washington Stealth defender and captain Kyle Sorensen. "People often imagine food banks and meal programs serving only the chronic homeless. But in fact, hunger is everywhere - the working poor, families and individuals with immediate crises such as a layoff, medical emergency, domestic violence or displacement after forced evacuation. The Stealth want to help."

In 2012, with the generosity of people throughout the state, Northwest Harvest helped provide more than 28,500 meals to hungry people in Washington.

"The ongoing support of the Washington Stealth and its fans is crucial in the fight against hunger," said Andrea Flatley, Northwest Harvest's communication manager.

Donations directly benefit Northwest Harvest and its state-wide network of 350 food banks, meal programs and support for at-risk elementary schools. Over fifty percent of the food distributed goes to feed children and the elderly.

Suggested food items for donation include:

General food items: Oatmeal, whole grain pastas, brown rice, tomato products, canned vegetables, canned fruit, especially with low sugar (but not artificial sweeteners), canned fish or meat, shelf-stable milk, beef stew, chili and similar meals with low sugar and saturated fats.

Infant and baby foods: Baby formula, canned milk, infant cereal, jars of baby food, powdered or canned milk, baby diapers.
