Howes' goal propels Wave United to 2-1 win over Mariners

July 10, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) Forward Greg Howes scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute to spark Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team to a 2-1 victory over the Virginia Beach Mariners Friday night (7/9) at Uihlein Soccer Park. The win improved Milwaukee's record to 5-6-2 (17 points) while Virginia Beach fell to 6-8-3 (21 points). The Wave United victory also enabled Coach Art Kramer's team to extend its club record unbeaten streak to five straight games (4-0-1) as Milwaukee gained a split in the season series with Virginia Beach, which saw its own two-game winning streak come to an end.

Wave United got on the board first when Johnny Torres scored his sixth of the season in the 14th minute. Torres, while laying on the ground in the middle of the penalty area, was able to nudge the ball past Mariners' goalkeeper Matt Nelson after taking a touch from Todd Dusosky. Virginia Beach evened the count in the 31st minute when Hamisi Amani-Dove tallied his third goal of the campaign from 14 yards away after taking a pass from Jose Gomez.

The game-winning play developed when second-half substitute Digital Takawira chipped the ball to Howes at the top of the box. After flicking it to the right to get around his defender, Howes then banged home his fourth goal of the season from 15 yards out past a diving Nelson. Wave United withstood some intense pressure from the Mariners in the last few minutes, including a curling shot by Kevin Knott at the top of the penalty area that was batted away by Milwaukee ‘keeper Jim Larkin in the 89th minute. Larkin (5-6-2) finished the night with two saves while Nelson (6-7-2) registered three.

Milwaukee continues its home stand on Wednesday night, July 14, 7:35 PM when it hosts the Calgary Mustangs at Uihlein Soccer Park. Wednesday is also 103.7 Kiss FM "Carload Night" at Uihlein, with admission per vehicle (and all fans in it) just $25, excluding the $5 Uihlein Parking Fee. Individual general admission tickets are $12 (adult) and $8 (children under 12). Call the Wave / Wave United Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for more information, or visit www.milwaukeewaveunited.com.
