MOLINE, Ill. (January 8, 2014) - Scott Howes completed a hat trick by scoring a power play goal at 3:13 of overtime to give the Brampton Beast a 5-4 win over the host Quad City Mallards Wednesday night. While the Mallards (16-7-6, 38 points) did earn one point for the sudden death defeat, the Beast (18-14-2, 38 points), by claiming its fourth consecutive victory, moved into a fifth place tie with Quad City.

Howes tipped in the game winner just four seconds into a Mallard penalty against Mike Stinziani. Stinziani was called for hooking mere seconds after Brampton goaltender Kris Westblom made his thirty-seventh and final save to deny the Mallard winger's breakaway bid.

It was Howes who had forced overtime by scoring the only goal of the third period from the slot at the 12:26 mark.

The Mallards scored four times in a wild second period to come from behind and grab a 4-3 the lead. The Mallard rally began only after Jason Pitton pounced on a rebound just 1:21 into the second to double what had been a 1-0 Brampton advantage. Thomas Frazee kick-started the Quad City onslaught by batting in a power play goal from the side of the net at 6:27 of the middle frame. With each team down a man, Matt Boyd converted Gergo Nagy's cross-crease pass and knotted the contest at two at 8:50. While the Beast would rebound to reclaim the lead at 15:23 with Matt Caruana's close-range power play goal, the Mallards responded by grabbing their first lead with two goals in a minute and five seconds. At 16:54 Gabriel Levesque's blast from the high slot deadlocked the score at four; at 17:59 Vladimir Nikiforov raced into the goalmouth to snap the puck past Westblom and break the tie.

Howes had given of sign of things to come when he opened the scoring by burying a Jason Pitton centering pass at 5:38 of the first period.

The Mallards return to action on home ice Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Wichita Thunder. Friday's game is a $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X. $1 hot dogs and beers will be available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season.
