
How The West Was Won, Philadelphia Wings Defeat Colorado Mammoth

Denver, CO - Finding success on the road, the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) defeated the Colorado Mammoth 14-12 to take game one of the season series between the two on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center. Philadelphia improved to 5-9 on the season and trail Toronto by only a half game for the final playoff spot in the NLL East Division.
Philadelphia never trailed in the first quarter. The Wings were provided offense from the hot stick of Forward Jordan Hall. Hall recorded the initial two goals of the night for Philadelphia to open the game. Colorado evened things up late in the quarter to set the scoreboard at 2-2 after 15 minutes.
Rookie Forward Garrett Thul powered the Wings in the second quarter. Thul tallied two goals including a memorable behind the net dunk. Philadelphia again, never trailed in the quarter. Colorado ended the first half on a 2-0 scoring run to tie the game at 5-5 as the heads entered halftime.
For the third time in the evening, a quarter ended with the game tied. Philadelphia and Colorado swapped goals in the frame to combine for eight goals. The third quarter ended in a 9-9 tie. The Wings had surprising goals from Defenders John Ranagan and Brett Manney.
The final 15 minutes provided a thriller for the fans. With five minutes remaining, the score was even at 11-11. Philadelphia closed on a 3-1 scoring run to come away with the victory.
Captain Brodie Merrill and Forward Garrett Thul provided the Wings with the necessary offensive punch on the evening. Merrill posted seven points (one goal, six assists) and Thul recorded his first career hat trick.
Two former Wings led the scoring attack for Colorado. Forwards Drew Westervelt and Athan Iannucci totaled seven of the Mammoth's 12 goals. Both recorded hat tricks against their former squad. Veteran John Grant Jr. led all runners with nine points (seven assists, two goals).
Philadelphia makes their way back home to host the Calgary Roughnecks on Friday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Center.
