Houston Dash Goalkeeper Jane Campbell Voted NWSL Player of the Week
July 24, 2018 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) News Release
CHICAGO - Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell was voted the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 17 of the 2018 NWSL season.
Campbell, 23, made a season-high nine saves to lead the Dash to 1-0 win over the Washington Spirit in a match that was postponed due to poor field conditions to Sunday morning at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Following their sixth win of the season, Houston improves to 6-7-5 on 23 points, and sits just six points out of a playoff spot with six matches remaining on the season.
The Kennesaw, Ga. native started off strong with two key saves in the opening minutes of the match to deny Spirit forward Francisca Ordega. On the first attempt, Ordega dribbled around a defender and into the box striking a low shot to the far post but Campbell made a leaning kick save to keep it out of the net. On the ensuing corner kick, she went down to her right to collect a redirected attempt by Ordega.
The U.S. international came up big again to deny a shot by Spirit midfielder Estefania Banini in the 8th minute. She followed that up with two more stops to help the Dash to preserve a 1-0 advantage with saves against midfielder Taylor Smith in the 25th minute and forward Ashley Hatch in the 31st minute.
Just prior to halftime, Campbell made another key save in the 45th minute, this time cleanly catching a blast from Banini from the right side of her penalty area to send the Dash into halftime up 1-0.
In the 81st minute, Campbell came up with a dynamic save, leaping high to deny Hatch on a blast from the top of the area and push her shot over the bar. It earned her a Save of the Week nomination. (Watch highlight)
The Stanford product played all 90 minutes to earn her second clean sheet of the season and finished with four crossed claimed including one saving catch as well as one completed pass into the final third, according to Opta.
It is the first time Campbell has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the tenth time a member of Dash has won the award.
The Houston Dash will return to action following the international break on Sunday, Aug. 5 at 8:30 p.m. ET against Utah Royals FC at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
