Houston Comets Re-Sign Veteran Tina Thompson

HOUSTON (March 31, 2008) - The Houston Comets have re-signed Tina Thompson, it was announced today by Houston Comets Head Coach and General Manager Karleen Thompson. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Thompson has been a mainstay of the franchise since becoming the first player selected in the inaugural Women's National Basketball Association Draft held on April 28, 1997.

"Tina is definitely the leader of this team and re-signing is an indication of her commitment to the Comets," said Coach Thompson. "A veteran of her caliber who possesses a great work ethic, both in practices and games, is the best example you can offer younger players."

With eleven WNBA seasons under her belt, Thompson has built a stellar basketball career, serving as a key piece of the Houston Comets teams that earned four consecutive WNBA Championships (1997-2000). A member of the WNBA All-Decade Team, Thompson has been repeatedly selected to the WNBA All-Star Team since the league began hosting the game in 1999, only missing the 2005 game for the birth of her son, Dyllan, and earning All-Star MVP Honors in 2000. Thompson has been named to the All-WNBA First Team on three occasions (1997, 1998, 2004) and the All-WNBA Second Team five times (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007). She stands in the league's top five all-time leaders for points (no. 2 with 4,882 points), rebounds (no. 4 with 2,003 rebounds), three-point shots made (no. 2 with 439 three-pointers) and minutes (no. 2 with 10,360 minutes).

A member of the 2007-08 USA Basketball Senior Women's Team, Thompson previously won a gold medal with the 2004 United States Women's Olympic Team in Athens, Greece.

Thompson is currently playing her second season with the Spartak Moscow Region team in Russia, after previously helping the team capture the 2007 EuroLeague Women title and Russia Superleague crown.

AUniversity of Southern California graduate, Thompson competed with the Lady Trojans women's basketball team in the 1994, 1995 and 1997 NCAA Tournaments, reaching the Elite Eight in 1994.
