Houston Comets News Release

HOUSTON - Houston Comets Head Coach and General Manager Van Chancellor announced today that the team has re-signed center Tari Phillips to a free agent contract. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Phillips (6-2, UC Central Florida '91) averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 32 games (one start) last season with the Comets. During the season, Phillips recorded 17 points at San Antonio (June 18), which marked her highest point total in a game since she was a member of the New York Liberty in 2003. She also pulled down a season-high eight rebounds vs. Connecticut (June 10).

A four-time WNBA All-Star, Phillips holds career averages of 10.1 points and 6.0 rebounds in 205 games with the Orlando Miracle (32), New York Liberty (141) and the Comets (32). In seven seasons in the WNBA, she has earned All-WNBA Second-Team honors (2002), and was named the 2000 WNBA Most Improved Player. She has recorded 36 double-doubles in her career, and went over the 2,000 point mark last season at San Antonio (June 18). Phillips was originally selected by Orlando in the first round (8th overall) of the 1999 WNBA Draft, and then selected by the Portland Fire in the third round (12th overall) of the WNBA Expansion Draft on December 15, 1999. She was then traded to the New York Liberty for Carolyn Jones-Young on May 28, 2000.

This season will mark the 10th Anniversary for the Comets and the WNBA, making it the longest-running professional women's league in history. The 2006 season will tip off at Toyota Center on May 21 when the Comets host the San Antonio Silver Stars.
