Hot Streak Comes to An End for Aviators

June 5, 2019 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Lafayette Aviators News Release

Danville, IL- The Lafayette Aviators (5-1) fell to the Danville Dans (4-2) with a final score of 6-3. This marks the Aviators' first loss of the season, ending their hot start to the season. A 5-0 start is the Aviators' best open to a season in team history.

A scary moment for the Aviators arose in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded after two singles and a walk, Danville's Wes Toups stepped up with two outs. Matt Burleton (Marian) induced a ground ball to end the inning and the Dans scoring threat.

The Aviators were able to manufacture runs throughout the first five games of the season, and they were able to do so again on Wednesday in Danville, starting in the third inning. Tyler Powers (Purdue) singled and Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) was hit by a pitch. With two men on, Braedon Blackford (Carl Sandburg) delivered with a deep sac fly to left field to score Powers from third for the first run of the day.

Two innings later the Aviators struck again in the fifth. A Zach Schwartzenberger (Toledo) single and a Braedon Blackford double got things going. Up next, Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois) singled to bring in Blackford and give Lafayette a 2-0 lead.

Zach Schwartzenberger singled again in the sixth inning to drive in another run, making it 3-0 Lafayette. Wednesday was the Toledo outfielder's first multi-hit game as an Aviator.

Burleton lasted until the sixth inning on the mound. The lefty starter gave the Aviators a strong start with five and two-thirds innings on the hill, striking out seven. Danville did not score with Burleton throwing to them.

After Matt Burleton, the Lafayette bullpen struggled to protect the lead. Danville's Cade Brown knocked a two-run homerun in the sixth inning to bring Danville within one run. Then in the seventh inning, the Dans centerfielder Wes Toups doubled to bring in two runs. The Toups double flipped the lead and gave Danville a 4-3 advantage. In the eighth, Cade Brown's second homerun of the day followed by a Richard Sorrenti sac fly made it 6-3 Dans.

Chris Monroe (Illinois Springfield), Zach Schwartzenberger, and Braedon Blackford all had multiple hits in the ballgame. Wednesday was Monroe's third multi-hit game so far this season, while it was the fourth game that Blackford had notched multiple base hits.

The Lafayette Aviators take on the Danville Dans again on Thursday, June 6th for the first game at Historic Loeb Stadium this season. Purdue Football Head Coach Jeff Brohm will throw out the ceremonial first pitch as the Aviators celebrate Purdue Night at the ballpark. It will also be a Thirsty Thursday to be presented by People's Brewing Co.
