Kentucky Horsemen News Release
Lexington, KY, June 13, 2003 â The Lexington Horsemen today announced that they have signed former University of Kentucky running back Derek Homer. Homer, who played for the Wildcats from 1997 to 2000, ranks third on Kentucky's career receptions list, with 129 catches, and ranks ninth on UK's career rushing list, with 1,689 yards. Homer was a member of the last two Kentucky teams to reach a bowl game (1999 Outback Bowl and 1999 Music City Bowl). He recorded four 100-yard rushing games in his career, highlighted by a 137-yard effort against Tennessee in 1997. He also had one 100-yard receiving game, a 103-yard day against Alabama in 1997.
After his UK career, the 5'10", 200 pound Fort Knox native was signed as a free agent by the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. The Ravens assigned him to NFL Europe, where he finished in the top ten in the league in rushing. After a season in Europe, Homer was signed by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League before returning to Kentucky.
"Derek is an excellent addition for us," said Horsemen Head Coach and General Manager Tony Franklin. "I had the privilege of coaching him in college, and I think he can make some great contributions to our team as we try to make the playoffs."
Homer participated in his first Horsemen practice on Thursday, and will dress for Saturday's game against Tennessee (4-6). He is expected to see game action against the RiverHawks.
