The final regular season meeting thisyear between the Tulsa Drillers and the Corpus Christi Hooks looked nothing like the first 13 meetings. Eight of those 13 games had been decided by a single run, with the largest margin of victory in any of the game beings only three runs. But in the series finale Wednesday night, the Hooks scored two first-inning runs against Tulsa starter Ubaldo Jimenez and then added four more in the third to post a comfortable 8-0 win at Drillers Stadium.
To make the loss worse, first-place Wichita swept a doubleheader from San Antonio Wednesday to drop the Drillers 3 ½ games behind the Wranglers in the East Division standings.
It was a particularly rough night for Jimenez, considered the top pitching prospect in the Colorado Rockies' farm system. The right-hander failed to get out of the first inning. After retiring the game's first hitter, Jimenez surrendered two hits, two walks and a wild pitch. His night ended after reaching a maximum pitch count for one inning as he struck out Charlton Jimerson with the bases loaded for the inning's second out.
Ben Crockett took over for Jimenez and forced in a second run with a walk before retiring Jason Clements on a fly ball that finally ended the inning.
The Hooks put the game away with their 4-run third. The big blow came from Clements who tripled with the bases loaded to increase the lead to 5-0. A single by Josh Anderson made it 6-0.
Corpus Christi added two solo home runs to complete the scoring. Dax Norris homered off Ramon Ramirez in the fifth, and Mark Saccomanno took Edwardo Sierra deep in the seventh.
The Drillers managed only six hits in the game and never advanced a runner past second base. Tony Miller was the only Tulsa player with more than one hit, finishing 2-4 with a pair of singles and a stolen base.
The loss for Jimenez was his fourth since joining the Drillers against two wins.
Corpus Christi starter Jason Hirsh picked-up the win to improve his record to 12-8. The 12 wins tie Hirsh with three other Texas League pitchers, including Tulsa's Jon Asahina, for the most in the league.
Tulsa will now embark on its final road trip of the regular season. The Drillers will play four games in San Antonio and four more in Springfield. The trip begins Thursday night in San Antonio against the Missions. Enmanuel Ulloa (4-3, 3.19 ERA) will pitch the opener for Tulsa against Juan Sandoval (8-9, 4.21 ERA).
The Drillers have won 6 of the previous 10 meetings with the Missions this season, including 2 of 3 in San Antonio.
