Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

Bridgeport . . . These days the Bridgeport Bluefish locker room at Harbor Yard doesn't ring with the sounds of the boys of summer, but with the chattering of a dozen volunteers packing Christmas baskets of food, toys, and other gifts for 80 local families, including 120 children.

The Evergreen Network, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to comfort families in the Greater Bridgeport area who are affected, directly or indirectly, by HIV/AIDS. At Christmas, and other major holidays, Evergreen assembles and delivers baskets of food, toys, and other gifts to its client families, tailoring the contents of each basket to the needs of each family member.

"That's where we come in," said Charlie Dowd, general manager of the Bridgeport Bluefish. "Evergreen needs a staging area and distribution point to accomplish its work and we have an excellent space to offer for that purpose. "So, for several years now, we've been working with the Evergreen people at Christmas, making our facilities available to help them accomplish their mission. We're very pleased to play a supporting role in this important community activity."

Adaline Q. DeMarrais, of Fairfield, is the founder and director of the Evergreen Network. She said she is extremely grateful to Mr. Dowd and the Bluefish organization.

The Bluefish management and all the people we've worked with at Harbor Yard have been wonderfully generous," she said. "We're indebted to them not only for their willingness to help but also for their marvelous spirit of cooperation." "We offer a range of programs," she said, "including support groups for both children and adults, tutoring for youngsters, as needed, summer camp scholarships, and birthday and holiday celebrations for children and families." "We're grateful not only to the Bluefish," she said, "but to all those who support our efforts with their time, their treasure, and their talents. Without the help of our volunteers and financial supporters, we simply could not exist."
