Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (January 17th, 2006) - The Gary Steelheads had plenty to celebrate in Tuesday night's All Star game, despite the Western Conference 119-110 victory. Steelheads' forward Randy Holcomb, returning to action after an NBA 10-day contract with the Chicago Bulls, was named MVP of the mid-season classic.
Holcomb played like a man on a mission, pacing all Eastern Conference scorers with 20 points. He also added 13 rebounds in a losing cause. Teammate Jimmie "Snap" Hunter added 15 points with 2 assists, while center Chris Alexander chipped in 5 points for the East.
Although no Steelheads started in the game, Holcomb and Hunter came off the bench early to fuel a 37-point first quarter for the East. Holcomb hit 3-of-his-first-4 shots, while Hunter added a field goal and two assists. Center Chris Alexander entered later in the quarter and contributed two quick field goals.
The West won the second quarter 26-20, despite 7 points and 7 rebounds from Holcomb. By the half, the 6-foot-8 forward was leading everyone on the floor with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The West overpowered the East in the third quarter, 39-22, setting up a dramatic fourth quarter as the East made their run. Holcomb and Hunter were on the floor most of the quarter, with each scoring six points.
Holcomb's basket in the lane tied the game at 92 with 8:24 remaining, but the West stars scored the next four points. Hunter drove for a basket, closing the lead to 96-94. His free throw later in the quarter pulled the East within one point at 100-99 with 5:45 remaining. The West scored the next six points to pull away for the victory.
The Steelheads return to regular season action Friday night, as they host the Idaho Stampede at the Genesis Center. Game time is 7:05PM.
