Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - After losing a one-run lead with two out in the ninth, the JetHawks defeated the High Desert Mavericks in walk-off fashion, 5-4, on a 12th -inning home run by Brian Holberton on Friday night at The Hangar.
The win came in spite of the JetHawks (74-63) going just 3-for-17 with men in scoring position and stranding a total of 16 runners on base.
Holberton's home run came off Mavericks (76-61) reliever Pat Kaminska (1-1) to lead off the bottom of the 12th and was his fourth of the season. The catcher had entered the game as a defensive replacement to begin the top of the inning.
Lancaster had opened the top of the ninth with a 4-3 lead. But with two out, a Joe Jackson ground ball to first bounced high off first base and resulted in a double to right field, and Royce Bolinger followed with a game-tying RBI-single off reliever Kevin Comer.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alex Bregman hit a solo homer to left field off High Desert's Jose Monegro, breaking a 3-3 tie. The JetHawks had trailed, 3-1, entering the bottom of the sixth before tying the score on consecutive RBI-singles by Sean McMullen and Mott Hyde against Reed Garrett.
The Mavericks had opened the scoring in the top of the third inning on a two-run homer by Chris Garia. Chase McDonald led off the bottom half with a double and scored on a James Ramsay double, but High Desert increased its lead to two runs in the fourth on a Jackson RBI-single.
David Paulino received a no-decision for the JetHawks, despite limiting the Mavericks to three runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out eight while walking just one. Ryan Thompson (1-0) earned the win after pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit.
The series continues on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. The JetHawks will send Austin Chrismon (7-3, 4.52) to the mound while the Mavericks will counter with Trey Lambert (8-3, 4.70). The first 1,000 fans will receive a 2015 JetHawks team poster presented by American Medical Response.
