Rockford IceHogs News Release
Kalamazoo, Mich.- It wasn't too long ago that the Rockford IceHogs couldn't win in the shootout. On Saturday night the Hogs and goalie Frederic Cloutier outlasted the Kalamazoo to knock them off 2-1 at Wings Stadium in a shootout that lasted 13 rounds, an IceHogs club record. Preston Mizzi, taking his second shootout attempt of the night, fired home the game-winning marker past Tom Askey in the 13th round.
The game was sent to the shootout after some late-game heroics from Kalamazoo's Kory Karlander. Karlander picked a rebound fired from defenseman Chris McAllister and flipped in his 34th goal of the campaign past Cloutier at 19:23 of the final frame.
That was all that Cloutier would allow in regulation and the Hogs puck-stopper stopped 12 of the Wings 13 attempts in the shootout to earn the win. The only blemish for Cloutier in the shootout came from a Nick Bootland shot in the third round of the shootout. With Rockford down to its last shot in the shootout Jason Ralph scored the IceHogs only other goal in the fifth round.
Neither team lit a lamp in first frame, but Rockford did in the second. While on the power play, defenseman Nathan Lutz fired home his ninth marker of the season past Askey at 6:17 of the middle frame for the 1-0 lead. Forwards Bryce Cockburn and Jason Ralph assisted on the goal.
The Hogs were outshot in the contest 34-23 and finished 1-for-7 on the power play. Cloutier earned his 32nd win of the season, one shy of Michel Robinson's record set during the 2004-05 season.
