Hockey Week on the Gulf Coast Begins

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning has partnered with the Pensacola Ice Flyers and Junior Ice Flyers to bring Hockey Week on the Gulf Coast beginning today and running through to Saturday.

The Lightning has brought their Build the Thunder program to local schools in Escambia and Santa Rosa County running this school week. It is a five-year community initiative to help spread and grow the game of hockey and teach life skills lessons to elementary-aged kids. The Ice Flyers and their mascot, Maverick, will also be in attendance at select times throughout the week as they contribute to the program before and after practice.

The Escambia County schools taking part in the program this year are NB Cook Elementary, Scenic Heights Elementary, Global Learning Academy, AK Suter Elementary and OJ Semmes Elementary. Santa Rosa County schools participating are Holley-Navarre Primary School, Rhodes Elementary, Bagdad Elementary, Gulf Breeze Elementary and Chumuckla Elementary.

Hockey Week on the Gulf Coast builds up to the Ice Flyers' Tampa Bay Lightning Night on Friday, November 30 at 7:35 p.m. Special guest Dave Andreychuk, a former Tampa Bay Lightning captain, Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Fame member, will be in attendance. Fans will get a chance to meet Andreychuk and get his autograph beginning at 6:00 p.m. when doors open. Alyssa Kent and Stephanie Allen of the Lightning Girls and the Lightning's mascot, Thunderbug, will also be in attendance.

To finish off the week, the Junior Ice Flyers are hosting their Try Hockey for Free event Saturday, December 1 from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Pensacola Bay Center. It is open to everyone between the ages of four and nine and is a completely free experience to try ice hockey. No experience is required. Participants are required to bring some sort of helmet (hockey, bike helmet, etc.) and any type of gloves, as these are mandatory. For more information and to register, visit jriceflyers.com.
