Hinostroza Vanquishes Russians

Waterloo, Iowa-Vince Hinostroza's second goal of the game lifted the United States Under-18 Select Team over Russia 5-4 in extra time Tuesday during the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Pierstany, Slovakia.

After both sides exchanged goals during the final five minutes of regulation, Hinostroza delivered the victory for Team USA at 4:29 of overtime, set up by Jordan Masters and Brett Pesce. The United States owned a 2-1 edge at the beginning of the third, before Hinostroza scored his first goal 2:13 after intermission. The Russian squad answered with two power play goals within a two minute span to tie the game.

The victory improves the American record to 1-1 at the competition. Their final preliminary round game is tomorrow versus Slovakia. A win for the Selects would put them in a strong position to qualify for the semifinals on Friday. Last August, the United States finished second during the competition.

In addition to Hinostroza, Waterloo is also represented by goaltender Cal Petersen. Goalie John Gilles (Indiana Ice), defensemen Ian Brady (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) - who assisted on Hinostroza's first goal - and Justin Wade (Fargo Force), and forwards Masters (Muskegon Lumberjacks) and Brendan Silk (Team USA) are the other players with USHL ties representing the U.S.
