LYNCHBURG, VA (JULY 2, 2012) - The Hillcats held off the Dash for a 5-2 victory to salvage a split during Monday's doubleheader at Calvin Falwell Field.

Lynchburg (6-6, 45-37) dented the scoreboard with a first-inning tally before breaking out with three in the second. Emerson Landoni and Mycal Jones banged out consecutive RBI singles before the Hillcats capped the scoring with an unearned run.

Winston-Salem (5-7, 49-32-1) could not solve Lynchburg starter Cody Martin (8-6), who worked five innings and retired the first nine he faced. The Dash did manage one run against Martin, a fifth-inning RBI single by David Herbek. However, Martin was in control, striking out eight of the 15 he retired.

In the Dash's only other scoring inning, Trayce Thompson, who homered twice in the Dash's game one victory, led off the sixth with a double and later scored on a Cyle Hankerd RBI groundout.

Dash starter Steven Upchurch (1-1) suffered his first career High-A loss in his first start of the season. The righty allowed four runs, three of which were earned, in four innings. Out of the bullpen, Salvador Sanchez worked a perfect fifth in his first relief appearance as a member of the Dash. Bryan Blough followed in the sixth and, after an Adam Milligan solo shot, posted three straight strikeouts.

Thus far this season, the Dash are 5-3 in doubleheader games, and they are 4-4 against the Hillcats. Winston-Salem is a league-best 33-16 against Northern Division foes.

Winston-Salem and Lynchburg wrap up this three-game, two-day series Tuesday night at 7:05. The Dash send Justin Collop (6-2, 4.07 ERA) to the hill against fellow right-hander Chris Masters (0-3, 5.73 ERA). Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 6:50.

The Dash return home for a six-game homestand beginning Wednesday. There will be a post-game fireworks show Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tickets are still available, so call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 to secure your seats.
