KODAK, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Smokies (51-43, 14-11) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Birmingham Barons (43-50, 13-12) Friday night at Smokies Stadium. With the win, the Smokies moved back into sole possession of first place in the Southern League North in the second half.

LHP DJ Herz (W, 1-0) led the Smokies to victory in a bounce-back effort. After allowing four runs in just a third of an inning in his Smokies debut over the weekend, Herz responded with five quality frames to earn his first Double-A win. Herz allowed only one hit and struck out five while working around four walks. After a 38-minute rain delay, Peyton Remy worked three shutout innings in relief and Jeremiah Estrada racked up his second save to close the game.

Jake Slaughter provided enough offense to back Herz's quality outing. The Smokies' third baseman drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with an RBI single in the fifth inning. Newcomer Jake Washer added a third run of insurance with an RBI single of his own in his first Double-A game in 2022.

The Smokies will be back in action on Saturday night at Smokies Stadium for the fifth game of their series against the Birmingham Barons. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET when the Smokies send RHP Riley Thompson (0-2, 6.48) to the mound against RHP Scott Blewett (4-4, 5.50).
