Philadelphia, PA. Philadelphia University Head Men's Basketball Coach Herb Magee, the father of Kay Magee, the owner of the 2007 ABA expansion Reading pro basketball team, broke the all-time Division II coaching record when the Rams beat Wilmington College 65-60. Just last week, Coach Magee tied Winston-Salem State's Clarence "Big House" Gaines' sitting record of 828 wins on the DII all-time coaches list. Magee, in his 40th year as head coach of the Rams, broke that record to become the top DII coach in NCAA history.
"Herb Magee has been an extraordinary coach and mentor to all his players over the years, and he has inspired us with his dedication, commitment and ultimately great success during his 40 years of coaching," said Philadelphia University President James P. Gallagher, Ph.D. "It is a legacy that anyone would be proud of, and we couldn't be more thrilled to celebrate this achievement on Philadelphia University's Herb Magee Court."
The legendary Coach Magee is known both for his own stellar playing record and his extraordinary streak of 829 wins - and counting - during his 40-year coaching career. All of his wins, both as a player and coach, have been earned at Philadelphia University. Philadelphia University, founded in 1884, is a private university with 3,200 full-and part-time students enrolled in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs. The University includes Schools of Architecture, Business Administration, Design and Media, Engineering and Textiles, Liberal Arts and Science and Health."
"I am very proud of my Dad. We are a basketball family and his achievement is extremely exciting. One of the reasons I went into the ABA is because I know that I can call on him for sound advice and guidance," said daughter Kay, "Congratulations Dad. We'll honor you at opening night."
