Heatwave go to Texas to sign two more players

October 19, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Sacramento Heatwave News Release

The Fresno Heatwave go back to the Lone Star State of Texas to ink two more players for the upcoming 2005-06 ABA Season! Guard/Forward, Mikey Marshall, who played for Legendary Coach, Bob Knight at Texas Tech University and former Prairie View University Point Guard, Christian Sonier have signed contracts with the Heatwave.

"We really have signed two very athletic players in these two guys! Both are young professional players, but talented. Mikey played for a good friend of mine, who coached last season in the British Basketball League. Mikey is very talented and can do a lot of things on the court. I think versatility is Mikey's best trait right now as a player on this level. That with his excellent defensive skills truly convinced me he could be a very valuable addition to our team here in Fresno. In Christian, we get a young man who just has a great desire to play on the professional level. I first saw Christian in a tryout camp in Fort Worth, TX last summer. His improvement over the past year has been dramatic and I do believe physical maturity has allowed him to become a better player. Like so many players coming out of college, a player has to be physically mature, and I think that is what Christian did. He'll have a very good understanding of what I want from a Point Guard, having been in our Texas Tycoons Training Camp last year. It'll help him and I feel he is prepared now to truly have a viable chance of making our roster here. " stated Coach Tucker.

Mikey Marshall is a 6'5 - 220 Guard/Forward. Marshall averaged 18.7 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Birmingham Bullets of the BBL last season. Marshall as well averaged 9.5 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game his senior season at Texas Tech. Yet, Marshall was a defensive stopper at Tech under Bob Knight. Marshall was also a standout High School player at Tulia High School in Texas averaging 13.3 points per game, 9.7 rebounds per game and 3.8 assist per game his senior season.

Christian Sonier is native of Houston,TX. He joins Wendell Greenleaf and DeRon Rutledge as another Houston, TX hoopster to sign with the ABA Franchise in Fresno, CA. Sonier is a 6'1-170 Point Guard. He averaged 14.1 points per game and 4.7 assist per game his senior season at Prairie View University. Sonier also holds the single game scoring record at Prairie View scoring 41 points against Grambling University during his senior season.
